JMU Early Action for Fall 2022 Admission

That was somewhat disappointing

Would academic merit awards be listed on this financial sheet?

The financial aid that was provided yesterday is listed as a Preliminary Aid offer for the purpose of comparison only. It isn’t the final financial aid. The board still has to meet to discuss and vote on the 2022 tuition rates (small print at the bottom). The Offical Financial Aid letter won’t come out until late June according to the letter.

Did a lot of people receive merit? My daughter received nothing.

DD didn’t either.

Nothing here either. From what I read in previous years, I think merit awards by the department would come out later (Mar - May) instead of on the preliminary aid offer.

Same. DD got a $5500 loan and that’s all. But if final letter comes out in June, you need to have already committed so that makes no sense to me and leads me to believe that any “final” letter would not be much different than this preliminary letter.

There is a facebook group called JMU Class of 2026 I believe.

I do think the overall cost of JMU is much more affordable than other state schools we’re looking at. University of Vermont for out of state is $61,000, University of Connecticut is around $56,000 and University of New Hampshire is around $55,000. So at $40,000 for out of state I would not be surprised if they didn’t give out a lot of merit awards.

My graduating senior at JMU didn’t get any financial aid, but did well with outside scholarships.

My incoming freshman got the same $5,500 in loans that everyone else did.

I agree with @SkiMom2022 that JMU is very reasonable in terms of OOS tuition, especially in relation to the New England schools around us.

Does anyone know what “Room Award” means? I can’t find information anywhere.

In light of the police shooting at Brewster Earlier in the week and now a gun related murder/multiple injuries involving a VA Tech student last night at a bar near campus, we are feeling a little unsettled. For those from the JMU area is Gun violence like this common? I know sometimes there are just spikes in activity like this that aren’t really tied to anything else. But two shootings on or near a VA campus in a week has us feeling a little anxious. Any input appreciated. And no talk of gun rights please as I don’t want to stir the pot in either direction.

I think they listed out the tuition as $47k. Does yours say $40k?

It includes about $4000 of extras like travel and spending money. It’s more like 42/43 with room and board plus fees. But our daughter is looking at Delaware as her other choice and it is about 10k higher, so JMU is a relative bargain compared to a lot of other schools.

This is not the norm in this area. I am shocked by both shootings. This does not represent what you would expect at all, but I understand your concern.

Agree but my daughter got a nice package from UNH and she’s an average kid grade wise. From what I read JMU sends out their financial packets way too late to make a decision when $ is a factor. A bit disappointing in my opinion.

I agree it’s on the “cheaper” side when friends have kids applying at schools that cost $75k! My daughter got into Marist too which I believe is 60-ish? She got $12k/year there but it’s not on her list- only applied because it’s my husband’s Alma mater and he got a application fee waiver code so we threw it in

Thank you @4mom22. Violence can happen anywhere, just so sad for the students and employees at colleges in VA right, and I hope everyone feels relatively safe.:blue_heart:
