JMU MT/theater minor

Hi, I’m asking on behalf of a friend here. He wants to apply to JMU, but he’d only minor in theater or musical theater. What does he need to know? Can he still participate in productions etc? Thanks!

All productions at JMU are open. Meaning that any student may audition. Non-majors are sometimes cast in both mainstage and student directed plays and musicals. The students who seem most likely to be cast are the ones who have continued with their acting training past HS in courses at JMU. There is a theatre minor that quite a few students pursue. There is no musical theatre minor, but non-MT students may take certain musical theatre classes on a space available and auditioned basis. The musical theatre courses with a THEA course number may count towards electives in the Theatre minor (ex. MT Performance is THEA 353), dance (DANC) and music (MUS or MUAP) classes will not count towards the Theatre minor, but any non-required course a student takes at JMU counts toward University Electives. Students do not need to audition to declare a Theatre minor.
