Job opportunities for Accounting or Business majors at JMU

Hello everyone,

I am currently a NVCC students transferring to JMU under their guaranteed admission agreement. I will pursue a degree in accounting and most likely pursue my masters in one shot in order to sit for the CPA exam. I have heard JMU’s business program (especially accounting) is one of the best in virginia, and the CPA pass rate was the best in the nation a couple years ago. I wanted to know what firms usually recruit heavy from JMU, what the starting salary was for some of you that went to JMU, and how long did it take to find your first job. I want to know how reputable JMU is with companies around DC and the northern virginia area. I am considering VA TECH also but I haven’t heard much about their business program + I’ve heard some classes are overcrowded. Please give useful and not too biased answers. Thanks!

You cannot go wrong with either of these (JMU or VT). Both are very similar in the answer to each of the questions above and the end result will really depend on how well you do and less about which school you attend. US World & News Report 2015 ranks VT’s Pamplin undergraduate program as 38th overall and 23rd public institutions only. Given VT is considered a “national” university and JMU “regional” it is hard to really get comparable rankings. Besides, I am not a fan of using rankings as a decision maker. Go where you feel most comfortable personally. Lastly, I am unclear on why you need a masters to sit for the CPA. Has something change in the years since I graduated or maybe I misunderstood your comment? Best of luck.
