Job Prospects for Asian Lawyers in the US?

So lets say you're a mixed Asian lawyer from the US who graduated from a top law school. Other than other Asian immigration clients, what other clients would come to an asian lawyer? Lets say you wanted to make 150k - 250k....is that possible for most asian lawyers? Like for me personally, if I wanted to sue someone, I'd hire a white lawyer myself, simply because I have no idea what the judge is thinking (he could be racist and you never know so I'd never take chances)....and plus, sometimes judges are used to seeing white lawyers in court so picking a white lawyer or even a black one would make it seem 'natural' and would skew the case in your favor.

So anybody know what the job/salary prospects for asian lawyers are?

This is a joke, right?

no, its not a joke. im just wondering if i should stop considering law if I can't get any clients and make good money. as racist as my post sounded, im sorry, but i hope you get where im coming from.

I'd also like to know more about this. I know that the glass ceiling exists for minority lawyers, and I'm wondering how low is the ceiling?

Put it this way: Cartera is an extremely experienced headhunter for lawyers, possibly the single foremost expert anybody could ever want in the subject of hiring. And he can't believe you would worry about this.

I can't believe anyone would worry about something like this. We hire lawyers all over the country based on referrals, skill, their firm's resources, and their Martindale ratings. We hire sight-unseen and race, sex, sexual orientation, age, or whether a prospective lawyer has big ears has never, never, never been a consideration. If you know your stuff, have a great work ethic, and earn your peers' respect (even if you've beaten them, by being well-prepared and professional), you'll get referrals and opportunities to earn bucks. There's no magic "Hey, look at my profile!...I'm going to be worth X dollars! (or not!)" in this business. Great lawyers can make a lot of money. Bad lawyers tend not to make as much money...although we all know lawyers that we think aren't so great that are waaaay overpaid, and some lawyers that we think are good that don't charge as much as they could. (I'm a really good lawyer but am unfortunately underpaid.)

As a lawyer, you're your own business and you're selling your knowledge/skill/experience. If you want to earn $250K, be a $250K+ lawyer.

Son - I mean bluedevil - please, I'm blushing... and I'm a she - but who's counting.

Perhaps the only people who discriminate against Asians are Asians.

Forget law. Trust me on this one. I have worked with lots of Asians. Asians should be restaurant owners or dry cleaners owners on the low end and math professors or computer science instructors on the high end. They really should not dabble in things like being basketball stars (can you name one decent basketball player who's Asian?) or rock stars or lawyers or porn stars or doctors or actors. These fields all require attributes which Asians don't have in abundance. What you say about racism in the field is exactly right.

...uh, seriously though, there was a thread exactly like this about a year ago. I think this is just a recycled troll.

I can't believe I never knew that. Sorry about that.

I'm half Asian & I don't think it's an issue being Asian in the legal field. If anything people stereotype Asians as hard-working and intelligent, which could work in your favor.

Yep, this is a recycled post. Facts changed slightly...and only slightly.

is there a glass ceiling for women though??

The issue of women and the law is a very interesting one . . . no, there is no glass ceiling but the uphill road to partnership in a law firm often seems rockier and steeper for women.

Unfortunately, I don't have time to do so today, but I will fish out exerpts from the many, many articles on this topic and post some in the next week or so.

ah ok. thanks.
