Hey there everyone! Can any current students tell me about John Muir College? I was accepted for Mechanical Engineering to the class of 2016 and am OOS. I hear that is difficult to get into this college and it has the easiest GE requirements.

Why is an issue to be in different colleges? Aren't all students part of the same university? What difference does it make if I was chosen to one over another?

So different colleges mostly differ on GE requirements and location. If you live on campus, you’re gold b/c Muir is like the middle of everything, so you can get anywhere in about 10 minutes.
You’ll definitely meet people from all colleges in your classes. The only Muir specific classes would be the two writing classes you take. You’ll probably meet mostly Biology majors in these writing classes. Generally, Muir has mostly Bio majors and Warren has mostly engineering majors. Other colleges have a good mix of all majors.
And congratulations!

I got into Muir as an Engineering Major, do you think i’d have a tough time getting to know ppl because of the excess bio majors in that college?

I wouldn’t worry about not being able to meet people. You’ll make friends with people outside of Muir definitely, meeting them through classes, clubs, and whatever.

You can make friends with people outside your major too. You’ll take common classes with Bio majors (maybe), Chem majors, other engineering majors, math majors, and just about everyone else. And when you take GE’s you’ll definitely meet a bunch of different people. So don’t get stuck with the mindset that all your friends are going to be engineers.

And I wasn’t saying that it wasn’t all Bio majors, just that the majority of them are. But there is also a good number of engineering majors compared with other colleges. From what I’ve experienced, Muir has a huge number of science majors, and almost no humanities majors.

To my knowledge, Muir doesn’t offer courses except for MCWP (Muir Writing). Most colleges only offer writing courses as specifically for their college. I don’t know if you’re talking about science courses counting for GE credit or what. But Muir GE’s are pretty lax, so I wouldn’t worry about them impeding with your college experience.

I’m also an engineer at Muir I’m hoping that there’ll be enough engineers that I can get help on work but not so much that all my friends are engineers. And it’s looking pretty good.

I’m also muir well its the best college cuz its hardest to get in and has easiest GEs. And you find smartest ppl i know like 20 regent scholars from muir haha
