I noticed that there were no Hopkins 2017 transfer discussions so I’m starting one
Literally right above this Convo
Not sure what that means haha
Do you guys think I have a chance for transfer admission?

I am a black male from the hood, who watched his cousin get shot by gang members, and has had to take care of a mom who had a stroke. But I have some very awesome extra curricular activities. I am president of my school’s debate team, and I’ve had to be the coach and president because our school couldn’t afford a coach. I am ranked as the best teenage orator in my city, and one of the top 80 orators in the nation. First black to win the California State championship in speech and debate. I started a tutoring program for black students at my school, because blacks were performing way lower than other ethnic groups. And because of that program, all of the failing black students who participated in the program ended up passing. I interned for a state senator, and when interning for him I hosted a debate tournament for inner-city youth. In addition, I wrote a bill called AB 672 which gives assistance to prisoners who are wrongfully convicted. The bill that I wrote was actually voted by the California State senate and signed by the state governor, and now the bill I wrote is now in effect. I also have won several awards for Mock Trial, Academic Decathlon, and I am a columnist for a local newspaper. I also have stopped a lot of peers in my neighborhood from joining gangs and getting addicted to drugs. My grades are low, but I’ve done amazing things. Do you think that they’ll look past my low high school gpa and test scores and give me a chance?
@amoore001 “My grades are low” Dude you have a 4.0 GPA in college haha. Not only do you present an upward trajectory with respect to your grades, you seem to be the epitome of a productive member of society despite your socioeconomic surroundings. You’re exactly what excellent institutions of higher learning look for in an applicant. As long as you convey your story well in your essays, I’d be absolutely SHOCKED if JHU doesn’t accept you dude.
thank you
@amoore001 For reference (and this is not a competition I am just attempting to draw some parallels between the two of us) I am a first generation immigrant, who grew up in Albania and The Bronx. I’ve too seen massive amounts of violence in my lifetime, I’ve witnessed my older brothers treading down self-destructive paths laden with crime and drug abuse, which ultimately led to their recurrent incarcerations, parental divorce, loss of family members etc. you seemed to have fared much better than I did in high school, which is very commendable. I graduated in the summer of my senior year with a 2.1 GPA and a one-time off-hand 1890 SAT score which I never studied for but was coerced into taking by my counselor (who is an incredible individual) I went to a local community college where I maintained a 3.94 GPA over 4 semesters, my big brother was sentenced to a decade in prison during my second semester of college, which is the only semester I slipped up (not using that as an excuse, but it was an understandably difficult time) I’ve worked as intern for numerous local political campaigns, and I run a sort of support group alongside my former counselor where we attempt contextualize the importance of education to high-schoolers similar to myself.
You have a different perspective on life and as long as you have appropriately highlighted academic and social transformation in your essays in your applications you should be golden.
So far the only school I have heard back from is UNC-Chapel Hill where I got in as an Out of State transfer applicant which is a relatively difficult thing to do. keep in mind that UNC was the first application I did and the writing was far from perfect, and certainly not to the level of the writing I would ultimately submit for Hopkins and various other schools. I am farrrr less qualified than you are, you shouldn’t even be nervous bro.
