Anybody know about the Journalism Major? We're starting looking at colleges with my daughter, and she likes what she sees in Miami U. She's an solid A student in everything but Math, lots of extracurriculars (newspaper, swim team, track team, chorus, Theatre, Community Service, part time job at our church rectory, summer lifeguard job) Since it's 9 hours away, I'd like to know more about the Journalism major before we commit time and money going there.

Hi, I'm actually on the faculty at Miami and know a little about the journalism program. It's a relatively new program, but has a wonderful director and some very impressive new hires. In addition, Miami has an excellent Interactive Media Studies ("IMS") Program that has a special relationship with Journalism; one of the Journalism faculty has a joint appointment in IMS. Between the Mass Communication Dept, Journalism and IMS, students can take courses across a full spectrum of media-based studyfrom the purely theoretical to the very hands-on. Journalism students also particpate in a senior level capstone experience, where they work on a real client-based project, as a student run (faculty mentored) team.
Best of luck with your decision.
