does anyone know if mcgill has a journalism program? i was looking at their website and couldn't find one. there is a school in montreal called concordia that does but i'm not sure if it is at the same caliber as mcgill. so does anyone either know if mcgill has a journalism program or if concordia is a good school with a lot of US students?

McGill does not have a journalism program. You can study media in their Cultural Studies program, but it is theory, not practice. Concordia is a well established school that does have a fair number of US students. It more closely follows the US university model with many programs intended to provide practical career training. For example, their film program focuses on production skills, while McGill's only considers film as an expression of a culture. Concordia is also much less selective and is essentially unknown in the US. However, students I've know who went there liked it.

Concordia is a fine college and is in the same area as McGill- in fact it is slightly larger in enrollment. However, Concordia has many more commuting students than McGill and does not have a campus per se, it is certainly an urban college.
It is not academically as rigorous as McGill, but if you want to major in journalism or film it is a much better choice than McGill. McGill students and Concordia students intermingle in Montreal. In fact, many of my daughters friends go to QUOM- the French University of Quebec at Montreal. My d. had a friend who looked into Concordia for creative writing.

thanks alot for your help

could you attend mcgill but take concordia classes?

mcgilldad: you mean UQAM (Universite du Quebec a Montreal).

YongeSt.Toronto: You are allowed to take courses outside of campus but the number of credits is limited (I think up to 9, which translates to 3 regular undergrad courses, but don't take my word for it).

Assuming there is one, what about working on the student paper, taking classes that give one substantive background in the area about which one wants to write (politics, some sort of science) and then getting a masters in journalism?

A lot, maybe most, fine journalists did not get undergraduate journalism degrees.
