Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent

Did anyone qualify for the Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent? If yes, did you include it on any college or scholarship applications? If yes, how did you word it? (e.g. Qualified for Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent or Member of Julian C. Stanley Study of Exceptional Talent or ???) Also, did you make use of the letters of recommendation from SET? (FYI - The Study of Exceptional Talent (SET))

My S is in SET but is just in 10th grade, so I cannot help you; I’m sorry! I would love to see replies from others, though!

Greetings! SET will provide free educational counseling for their members as well as supply letters to colleges that points out how exceptional it is to qualify for SET. For those unfamiliar, SET is the 7th grade 700 club - if you score over 700 on Math or Verbal SAT before turning 13, you qualify and just have to show your scores to get into the free program through JHU.

We have not used those services, but the free newsletters and magazines have been fun reads. My son has connected with some other SET kids through the years at competitions, and has recently gone through his 5 years of NLs and says “they read like a who’s who of science fair, math, and other competitions.”

There is no risk to join and it can be very beneficial. But it is not really something to list on a college app. Things that would be appropriate are ECs: clubs, volunteer activities, and work history, and summer activities- all in high school.

Both my kids are in SET, and my son had an 800 in math in 7th grade. We have also gotten to know Michelle Muratori because her family lives in So Cal, so whenever she is in town, we have a SET get together.

I always assumed that we would use Michelle as a reference when my son applied to college, but when it came time, we did not. This is an accomplishment that dates to 7th grade. There is a limit to how many refs you can send and how many accomplishments you can put on your apps. Just look at it from an Adcoms viewpoint… Well, great, a 7th grade accomplishment, but what has he done lately? Anyone in SET has what it takes to really shine in High School and drown out that impressive 7th grade SAT score. If not they have not lived up to their potential.
