July ACT Discussion Thread 2018

I thought the math was much harder than before. I had three questions left I had to guess on

Kiddo tells me the math felt pretty hard except for the last question which was suspiciously easy. There were a long string of identical letter answers which also threw him off.

What did everyone think of the July test? I thought math was hard and the rest wasn’t too bad.

Really I thought math was pretty easy.

I found the math to be super difficult this time. I felt like I knew almost no answers what so ever and having taken the ACT and the SAT both once I went back to the ACT again because I found the math and the rest of the test to just be in an easier format for me. I felt confident everywhere else though. I hope my score is okay enough so I don’t have to retake it again. I’m glad I’m not the only one who found the math more difficult this time.

Can it be tomorrow already?

OK, I’ve checked the ACT website and my kid’s status has changed from ‘registered’ to ‘tested’. This usually means that the scores are ready and should be posted tonight.

Fingers crossed.

I got the kiddo’s results, and it’s a wash, 32 again. Up two points in math, down two points in reading. I guess we’ve found his equilibrium. His superscore is now 33 so that’s nice.

Got my score!

35 Composite
35 English
32 Math (oof, I got an 800 on the SAT Math section though so that’ll have to make up for it)
35 Reading
36 Science

Scored a 32 again. Reading score went up but math went way down (-3 points). Really disappointed but kind of expected this.

Anyone took the July ACT and is still waiting for his score?

@zbrown01 how did you prepare for the ACT?

My daughter hasn’t received hers yet.

@Sue22 Which state? did you call ACT?

@m22499,
Massachusetts, extended time group. I’ll give them another week or two before calling. Not all scores are released on the first day. A delay can be caused by something as simple as a slow mail delivery of the tests from the testing center to ACT.

Yes, my daughter is still waiting for her score. Is this normal for results to be staggered?

Yes, it is normal. From what I’ve read a new batch will probably come out after midnight EST Friday. Look for her status to go from “Registered” to “Tested” on Thursday. According to ACT the normal score release is anywhere from 2-8 weeks, normally on Wednesdays and Fridays, but from what I’ve read if it takes more than a month there’s probably an issue and it makes sense to call ACT to check. The most common issue is a failure to fill in the test form with the same information as is contained on the registration form. Apparently 8-10% of all testers mess this up and it can take some time for them to manually match the test to the tester. Other issues can be tests that are returned to ACT slowly from the test site, irregularities of any sort at the test site (for instance a kid on the other side of the room reported for cheating will hold up the scores for everyone in the room including your kid), and in very rare cases lost tests. The best scenario could be that your kid’s scores jumped so much that they’re checking them against other testers’ answers to eliminate the possibility of cheating. The worst scenario is that your kid’s scores will match another nearby tester’s and they’ll be flagged and you’ll get notice saying the scores will be invalidated.

All of this is getting ahead of things, because only the first batch has been released and it’s common for ACT to release scores over time as they’re finished.

If your kid took the ACT with the writing section you won’t get an email until that portion is scored, which is generally 2 weeks after the multiple choice portion comes in, but you can check for the those sections and composite on the portal. IOW, although the official report isn’t ready until the writing section comes in you don’t have to wait for that to see the E, R, M, S and composite scores.

Just got my kid’s scores this morning. Dropped a point in what was already by far her lowest score but gained 3-4 in all the others, so an overall gain of 3 points!
