June 14 2014 ACT Discussion

I really liked the essay topic. I think it’s one of the easiest that I have seen. (Maybe they gave us an easy essay since each multiple choice section was more difficult than normal!). I have heard that length does have an effect on the score you receive. As my AP English teacher put it: “the people grading the ACT are stupider than those who are taking it”. Think as a dumb grader. A long paper is great, it must have tons of accurate information. Unrealistic made-up examples are fantastic as long as they prove your assertion. Transitions are great, especially if they aren’t obvious (Finally, firstly, secondly, etc.). And finally… acknowledging the counterargument means you truly understand the prompt!.. All of these are quite outrageous, but it’s how the ACT graders grade. Just write to please them!

what’s considered a “long” essay on the ACT

Did anyone get black in the science question that asks for the color of tray? My reasoning is that black signifies an absence of colors and white as a mixture.

I agree, although it’s basically one of the things you need to remember from Bio freshman year, it was testing science knowledge… not reasoning…

Also, that Question about HCl on the math test bugged me too. Technically, you could have solved that using chemistry, if you knew that they completely dissolved

@MasterThinker‌ it was white

I said white for the science. That way the colors are easily visible and not distorted. I’m not sure though.

An essay should be at least 2 pages. 2.5 is a good length. 3 is great!

I love how there are physics question on math asking about acceleration

I said it was blue. Oh well !

Ya…that question was definitely testing on knowledge, not reasoning. Anyways, hoping to bump my composite from 30 to a 32 /:slight_smile:

Everyone who has taken the ACT before… Do you think this was a difficult test? Which sections in particular?

Ya, this one was definitely harder…I had never seen two seperate passages (the one with Bradbury) on Reading before. :-@

anyone remember the answer to that frieze question?. " frieze; carved into it…" Was there an answer choice with a relative clause ( i.e frieze, which carved into it) I’m not sure I put that one. But looking at it now, this answer choice seemed pretty ridiculous.

what was the answer for the acceleration one in math

I put a semicolon…reasoning was two complete sentences…cannot be sure though.

English was about the same, Math I don’t really remember. Reading was just a tad harder, and science was easier for me.

I expect to get around a 31 again, but with a higher science score and possibly lower reading and math. Maybe that would help my superscore though.

a= v/t, but i forgot the answer

@MasterThinker I agree. Half way through the passage, I thought “this is going to be extremely easy. This passage is so easy to understand”. THEN, I saw the second passage! >:(. I found the questions very difficult. The shifting viewpoint through me off. Ugh, I did horribly on the reading.

Yeah. Just realized that too. the A = V / T thing. That was testing knowledge as well. Knowing that acceleration is equal to velocity over time is a knowledge thing… not algebra/geometry/trig etc. abilit

Acceleration is the slope of the line.

Was this science section easy? I found the one about Ph difficult, and the conflicting viewpoints was annoying.
