June 14 2014 ACT Discussion

@GB1904 that’s actually what I’m doing lol I’m just watching Pokemon on Netflix. Thanks though I do feel a lot better now…I just need to remember that now the test is over and all I can do is wait. Worrying won’t help anything.

@michelle2912 haha you’re welcome! And I hope I didn’t seem rude–my friends say I’m entirely too blunt (: But if yo u work hard to increase your reading speed while keeping comprehension, it will help so much!

We all understand that of course rhetorical and inference based questions are a great understanding of complete comprehension. The problem is that I am sure you did not 40 for 40 it- nor did I. While this very act score of ours is being compared to those that took the April or February exams, in which the reading was based on a more factual manner. How can we compete? Obviously the curve will not compensate for those upper scores as the most generous reading score will be 39-40 scoring a 36. This means this English is a throwaway if not also ruining our comp scores…kind of a big deal- in the fact that the playing field is not level, ya know what I mean?

I will say that it isn’t entirely fair because other applicants have already achieved their desired scores on normal tests; we, however, were subject to a (in my opinion) very odd test. This does not equate to equality among applicants’ scores, and I am probably going to complain about it. I don’t feel like it’s right, even if I’m sure I did fine.

Haha thank you! It just seems so odd to have a change like this without notice- at the same time idk how they would have better implemented a new format since there is no age requirement and a person 15 can have a strong score and when the test gets harder just use his first score- if that makes any sense. At the same time I have no clue how colleges will differentiate with potentially two types of acts? Quite odd…

I just finished my sophomore year and I took the ACT for the first time today. I feel pretty good about the test, so I’m hoping this is the last time I have to worry about it. I’m pretty sure my graduating class, 2016, will face some challenges because, like others have said, students will be submitting scores for two fairly different tests. They’ll definitely need to fine tune the difficulty of the new format.

Who remembers the one question with the absolute value |x-5|<-1 or something. I put that it couldn’t be graphed but I was unsure on that one

I didn’t think the changes were unfair. I think it’s dumb that they said it won’t be implemented until 2015, though. They clearly made slight changes. It’s also dumb that their own practice book contains outdated (differently formatted) tests. Overall, the changes are completely fair… But we don’t have ANY current prep materials.

What changes are you guys talking about ? :/

@asg682 - That one is the null set (empty set). You can never have the absolute value of a number be less than zero. So that one would be couldn’t be graphed.

I felt good about the math section but didn’t get to the last 4 questions… What is my starting score in math if I missed 4?

@skthomas - You can’t really determine what your starting score is on any section. It really depends on the curve of the test. Four wrong could be a 34, but it could also be a 32 if the curve is harsh. That seemed like a pretty difficult math section overall in terms of time, so I think that the curve may be generous, but there’s really no way to be sure about that. My advice would be to just not worry about it and find out what you get when the scores come out :P

I got 4<x<6 for that |x-5| question wasn’t it <1 so it’s between that 4 and 6 not including 4 and 6 tho

for the math it wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t easy either … since it usually goes from easy to hard, you finish the the first half in like 20-25 min rather then 1 min per question so you have more time for the hard questions. but this test I was only a little bit above the time pretty much 1min per question… idk haha

do you guys think they r gonna do that weird reading thing for September now

guys I just noticed that there r 4 tests untill 2015 (when there so called change will be) do you think they r doing something like
June-reading change
sep- English change
October -math change
December -science change
and then changing everything for 2015

lol the red act book and all of them have nothing like that reading… where can I find a reading section like that to study

For the |x-5| question, I’m wondering if different forms may have had different versions of the same question. I had 72C, and am fairly certain that the whole thing was equal to 1, not -1. I checked for it. But this is making me doubt that, maybe I just missed it. Does anyone with the same form remember what the equation was in that question? Obviously it affects the answer

I had Test 72c, I thoroughly remember it being -1, and since an absolute value can not be a negative, I put empty set. Sorry man, you may have misread that.

Dang that inequalities question is so ■■■■■…
