Is it mandatory to go to the orientation in June or do most students sign up for classes online? Also, if mandatory, is it important to go to the earlier sessions so not to get shut out of classes?

It is not mandatory for sure. As to getting shut out of classes or not, I will leave that to current freshmen to tell us if they had any issues with that. I can say I have never seen that as a complaint.

Thank you! Also, is it worthwhile if we already visited? I know you get to stay in he dorms and all. If any current students have feedback it would be appreciated!

My son is a freshman and he didn’t attend the orientation last summer. He had no problem getting the classes he wanted.

My D got her classes online also. She did not attend the June session.

I think one on the good things about attending is that you get to speak to you pre-professional advisor about your classes and get advice.

thanks for all of your replies!

June orientation definitely isn’t mandatory or necessary! I didn’t go last year and I definitely didn’t need to. You’re basically just going to want to stay very up-to-date on housing, financial stuff, and classes. Some useful links:

tom.tulane.edu
Student affairs website, with tons of services on campus. Look through it, it’s interesting

classschedule.tulane.edu
The schedules of all the classes. You can search for specific ones if you know the course number or just click on the links at the left-hand side. For instance, you can click “Liberal Arts” and then click on the majors to see classes in that department. Or, at the bottom of the search page, you can have it search for classes that fulfill requirements, which is really cool!

This is the University catalog and has requirements for all the majors in it

This is the core curriculum guide that you’d get at academic advising at the June orientation. It’s sooo helpful and will really give you a sense of what you need to be doing your first semester.

Also, if you’re interested in pre-med, pre-dental, pre-law, or pre-professional anything, email Kathleen Maier at kmurphy@tulane.edu. She can help you set up your schedule, as can an academic adviser if you go to advising.tulane.edu and chat with an adviser there. You should be all set, if you just explore the various websites I’ve given you!

Oh, and send in a picture for your id, or you’ll be stuck with one you take on the hot, humid, and sweaty move-in day!!

trackie10x - Extremely useful post, ty. I especially like your suggestion about the pic, I never would have thought of that!
