Junior in HS

It is my Junior year and I am bombarded w/ hw, college prep and teams. It feels like this is the year that really matters. What should I be doing in terms of academy admissions and congessional nominations this year?

well first off,

Keep up with the course load... junior year is important...

contact you congresperson and senators... start filling out their nomination packets.

contact admissions and set up a overnight tour. and start filling out your admissions packet... also i got on a first name basis with admissions I think it helped...

start working out... get in good physical conditions.

start taking the SAT and if you dont do too well take the princton review class.

but most importantly dont forget to stop once and a while and go have fun. with all the course load and preasures you are facing you need some time to unwind. so schedule in some RR time.

good luck and if you need any further help PM me

Start making a resume of your extra curricular, sports and volunteer activities. Emphasis any office you held in any of the activities.

DON'T GIVE UP!!! If you have a dream it is worthy of pursuit.

DON"T GET DISCOURAGED if your initial SAT is not as high as hoped, seriously the Princeton Review Class is worth every penny we spent.

If you have not been in an JROTC program but your school has one, the instructors of those programs can be of tremendous help in giving you guidance of what to do.

I think KP10's instructors helped him with interview skills as I think he practiced on them.

IMO the number one thing the congressional reccommendation review board in our district was looking for is dedication and a personal and deep desire to be at the service academy. They were really keened into whether an applicant was there for his or her own internally driven goals or for Mom/Dad's dream.

LIVE YOUR DREAM!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU DREAM!!!!!

Since it is my junior year as well, I guess I'll have one more guy to compete with...

or work together with.. lol. Maybe since we are both going throught the same process we can conference on what we have to do at what time and what you may have done to make your portfolio impressive. Happy to co-operate-John

What ever you do......don't fall in love.

In fact, one of my friends from high school (we graduated together) is also a plebe here... so get competitive but not too competitive.

How do you get on first name basis with admissions?
respectfully,
usnahopeful

usnahopeful, I'll take a shot at your question on how to get acquainted with admissions. Complete your application promptly, schedule an overnight visit, and ask to include any appropriate coach and/or faculty in your visit. However, always be business-like and to the point so as to be respectful of their time and to let then know you are serious. Be a good listener to their advice, and follow-up promptly on action they suggest.

Call alot...but ask to talk to the same person every time you call..but be sure not to call just to bother them call with legit questions... also schedule a interview with them and visit the academy. ..I got to know LCDR Johnson. also do ever thin atlsmit said...he is correct

how physically fit should a plebe be?

be in shape... it helps,,, but you dont need to be like ripped

Isn't there a link somewhere on line with the specifications of the physical fitness test?

Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) background (while the minimums in every category are not indicated, there are some guidelines):

<a href="http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/facts/CFA.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/facts/CFA.htm</a></p>

Candidates Fitness Assessment Instructions:

<a href="http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/PDFs/CFA.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/PDFs/CFA.pdf</a></p>

Score Sheet:

<a href="http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/PDFs/Score%20Sheet%20CFA.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.usmma.edu/admissions/PDFs/Score%20Sheet%20CFA.pdf</a></p>

It may look somewhat intimidating but as KP10 says, "You don't need to be like ripped," just work up to it. Anyone who is athletic or in shape will be able to pass with perhaps a bit of prior practice and conditioning. However, don't leave the CFA to the last minute. Start getting to it early enough to give yourself a time cushion if you need to retake.

yes, start early, it will help lower your mom's stress level if you do. :)

dont be like me and have to go to the gym almost every day for a month and a half to get in shape to pass the test at last min... get it done earlier... it makes your last days of fredom more enjoyable...

and your mom more relaxed. he he.

Join the wrestling team at your school. If you haven't wrestled, you'll get killed, but you WILL get in shape and you will amaze yourself at what you can do.

It will also make you humble.

The physical part of Indoc is a walk in the park for wrestlers.

well luckily I work out atleast twice a week now. I have to admit I dont run as much as I should, so I will try tog et started on that. About wrestling, I've never done it except as part of a JROTC activity. I am afraid I simply dont have time in my schedule to wrestle, but what I will do is talk to our RAIDER team CO and see if he will let me drill w/ them once in a while. Thanks for all of the advice.-John

if you are working out... you will be fine... the runs in all actuality are a joke... just be in good condition and you will be fine.
