Junior in need of honest opinions!

I'm a current Junior who has been planning my future for interested colleges ahead of time. I have a significant extra-curricular/honors and awards background, but my GPA does not suffice. I'm taking a bunch of AP courses, but it was my sophomore year grades that brought my GPA down. All in all, I improved Junior Year even despite taking three AP's, and I will list my basic info below.

GPA- 3.4
ACT- 29+ (Past ACT's and current ACT score that is going to come out)
PSAT- 194

Significant Extra-Curriculars:

-Varsity Tennis (11, 12)
-JV Tennis (9, 10)
-Orchestra/Band (9, 11, 12)
-Chorus (10, 11, 12)
-Principal Players/Theatre (10, 11, 12)
-Select Vocal Ensemble (11, 12)
-CHS String Quartet (11, 12)
-Varsity Colorguard (11, 12)
-Wind Ensemble (11, 12)
-Bergen Youth Orchestra (10)
-Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra (9)
-Varsity Golf (10)

Honors/Awards/Leadership:

-Awarded 1st place in NJKTA Tennis Tournament.
-Recognized for making NJSMA Junior Regionals on Violin.
-Selected Concertmistress for Chodae Community Orchestra.
-Gold Medalist for school's Dancing with the Stars in both Swing and Rumba.
-Selected soloist for "Bring Him Home" in "Les Miserables" for school choir.
-Selected to lead, as well as 1st violin for String Quartet.
-Vice President/part of Steering Committee for Habitat for Humanity.

I didn't list everything but just more of the ones that matter.

Reach Schools: Georgetown, Cornell, and Columbia.
Target Schools: George Washington University, Emory, U-Mich, and NYU.
Safety Schools: Rutgers New-Brunswick, Boston University, Penn-State.

What do you think? Please help!

Hmmm, I dont know but I would think that Emory is more of a reach school, not just for you but for anyone with the reach/target/safety schools you have on your list. Its around the same as Georgetown, you should put those two together.

Plus, I dont think you should put the school dancing thing as an award, I dont think its that appealing to the admissions people. But you should definitely talk about your orchestra and singing stuff in your esaays! That would be good.

I think your safety schools are safety schools, Emory like I said before should be moved to reaches. NYU seems like a good target school in my opinion. Columbia is a realllllly far reach, like really far. One of our school valedictorians, she also got a 2360 on her SATs, did not get into Columbia. It is just that hard.

But still, dont let anything stop you!

I would put BU as target.

3.4 Unweighted or weighted? If it’s weighted… then, I’d say some of the schools should be moved to reach, but if it’s unweighted, wait until 2nd semester’s over and do your best during this last semester of your junior year. Some people on this board got into Cornell and NYU with a 3.4 unweighted, so you still have a chance. Rock that ACT/SAT and essay! =]

You should post this in the chances forum, rather than in college admissions.
