Just for fun: Adelphi was on Glee!

We got a big kick out of the fact that on a recent episode of Glee, the character Kurt announced that he wants to go to Adelphi!

We'll overlook that he pronounced it "Adelphee" instead of "Adelphi," that he seemed to think it has an MT major (which it doesn't) and a bunch of other mistakes.

It's the thought that counts! And if some kids look up the school as a result of watching the show, we're all for that!

Woot! This is awesome. I bet thousands of kids (no kidding) look up Adelphi. Perhaps the school, in the flush us such popularity, will add an MT major to scoop them all up? LOL!

Ha, I guess we’ll see. Adelphi has an excellent dance dept and quite good music, including vocal music. D is finding her voice lessons there extremely valuable, and her standards are very high. Many of the faculty in the theatre dept are personally quite devoted to MT, including the dept chair; D is taking an MT performance elective this spring and loving it. So I wouldn’t consider Adelphi on “the other side,” certainly not a place where MT is scoffed at. But I would say - for anyone who is curious - they are 100% devoted to educating actors and well-rounded theatre people, with MT as a focus pretty far down on their list of priorities. I suppose someone could minor in dance or music, if they had APs and could breeze through the gen eds. But they don’t even mount MT shows on a regular basis; this year they are doing Little Shop of Horrors, the first mainstage musical in several years.

EmmyBet - It sounds like your daughter is still happy at Adelphi, I hope so!

Yes, she is. All of the great things we hoped for have been true. The classes and profs are great, the productions first-rate, and access to the city is a breeze. She respects her peers and has lots of friends. I am firmly convinced it will just get better and better for her. The juniors who were at LAMDA last semester are back, having had a tremendous experience.

She has also found the Honors College meets her needs excellently for high-level academics. There have been disappointments, mostly in residential life and location, the two things she knew she was compromising on. Now that she’s in a routine, she is happy and satisfied, but it is a bit difficult for an out-of-town student there. She had to work to deal with some limitations in their food services, shuttles around town (nothing is in walking distance), lack of general campus activities on weekends. Everything we were told is true, though - the theatre kids are too busy to be bored and lonely, once things get going!

I think part of the adjustment for some of these kids to a BFA is that they probably had more well-rounded lives in HS - D was almost always involved in a play, but she also sang in several music groups, played instruments, etc. I think she was caught kind of short when she got to school and realized she couldn’t schedule activities that she was used to, like being in the choir, and that was very sad for her. But she does have time for socializing, and the theatre kids definitely know how to have fun in their own way!

:-)

So happy for her (and you)!
