I know that this is not a likely letter, but what is it then?

An e-mail telling you your information is complete, and to send them updates when they become available? There’s really nothing to read into here.

This is an email telling you your application is complete. Haven’t you gotten these from many colleges? It says nothing about chances of acceptance.

washu doesnt do likely letters and that in no way indicates you got in. its simply confirming they have all your materials (something a lot of schools send out). the only top schools i know of that do likely letters are dartmouth, uva, and columbia’s engineering school

Most top colleges send out likely letters in some form… Wash U included. A guy who lived in my dorm freshman year received a likely letter from Wash U about two months before official decisions were released. He did not receive any of the merit scholarships, as far as I know… perhaps he didn’t apply for them, though.

I remember one or two years ago, there was a thread on this board where a couple people received likely letters. I’ll see if I can find it.

Finally, aside from those types of likely letters, Wash U does notify finalists or semi-finalists for the merit scholarships at an earlier date. I think it’s usually a couple weeks before the regular admissions decisions come out.

It does seem really rare to get a Likely letter from Wash U, but it’s proven that they do exist (excluding the early notification of the merit scholarship finalists). Not sure how they decide who gets them, but, again, it appears to be very rare – more rare than the Ivies.

But, then again, Wash U also tends to release admissions decisions in March, anyway, before any other top college… so, by one interpretation, EVERY Wash U acceptance can be construed as a “likely” in the sense that you learn of your Wash U acceptance before other colleges :)
