Just Got into Cornell- as a Tanner Dean Scholar?!

I applied to CAS and they sent me a letter today. I never even heard of this scholar program...has anyone else?

The Pauline and Irving Tanner Dean's Scholars at Cornell University

I got the same letter about Tanner Deans in the mail today. It seems like Cornell is sending out a LOT of early likely letters and information about various special programs for applicants.... Does this mean anything? Have they chosen the 'top 50' applicants in the whole pool, or are they judging based on narrower criteria or handing out different X ___ Scholar letters to a whole bunch of kids? I'm skeptical.

BTW, this program doesn't seem to actually do anything.. I can't see any real benefits besides a $300 book award and .. "they encourage intellectual discussions outside of class."

I don't know...but I got one too :)

Is this only for CAS?

yes, i think it's only for arts and sciences.

i got my letter yesterday, and so did one of my friends (also goes to my school). the likelihood that they would give two out of only fifty slots to one school is surprising...it makes me wonder whether they gave out more than fifty and are counting on kids not accepting.

the letter says "about fifty." i think they're counting on some of the kids going to other schools.

Yea at my school there are 4 people that I know of who got a likely letter. One other person besides me was nominated as a tanner dean scholar, while the other 2 weren't. It seems that Cornell is sending out lots of letters to their applicants, or did my school just get lucky this year?

Does anyone know what it means to be a tanner dean scholar? Do you actually get any benefits other than the $600? Or is it just something to attract good students to CAS and something for the students to put on their resumes?

flowersunshine: i think it's a mixture of both. you also get private research funding for the summer between jr. and sr. year, which is great because you'll get a head start on your senior thesis. they also adjust the award amount depending on finaid, so if you ordinarily work during the summer to pay off loans, the research grant is even larger. another nice thing about the program is that you'll be assigned your own dean or senior professor as an adviser. i think they only have like 12 deans or something, so it's kind of like having a super guidance counselor.

but...i also checked out the website and it looks a little hastily put-together; the schedule of events for tanner dean's scholars is a bit sparse, as well. but you should also read the abstracts for the project proposals by t.d. scholars, because they sound absolutely amazing!

yeah i got it too…i think there’s a couple of people at my school who got it as well.

im pretty sure they just sent it out to like. a ****load of people. anyway doesn’t the letter only say that you were ‘nominated’ for tanner dean? not that you actually GOT IT? or does that mean we got it??

whatever.

um… btw this post is dated last yr

is there anything similar to this but for CALS?

think we should take it at face value; i feel good about it.

this is strange. mine says “we don’t normally select people from CAS”… does that mean it’s for the whole school?

was yours a tanner dean scholar?

There are other scholars.
