tanner dean scholar

i got a letter the other day saying that the admissions committee "looks favorably upon my admission" (basically, a likely letter) but it also said i was nominated for this tanner dean scholar thing that gets stipends and book money etc. did anyone else get this? i dont really know what it is...

Funny how Google works so well for these types of questions.
The Pauline and Irving Tanner Dean's Scholars at Cornell University

yeah, i looked at that last night. i just don't understand...it's like a special society??? if you are in this thing, do you have certain requirements/obligations???

Well. You aren't obligated to take advantage of your faculty mentor and special funding opportunities, but it would be entirely your loss if you didn't.

oh, i thought they would make you take certain classes with the other tanner dean scholars or something like that. i have heard about similar programs at other schools where you end up having to take special seminars that are hard to fit in your schedule. doesnt sound like this would though. do you happen to know what kinds of projects this funding could be used for? are they purely academic projects or could they be community service oriented as well?

Either, really. My one friend funded a trip to Argentina to study worker cooperatives there with the Dean's Scholars money.

that sounds really cool!!! so if i got this letter, i am automatically accepted into this program???

I believe so. Yes.
