Just got my ACT scores

Hey guys!
ACT recently posted the full score reports from the April 9th test date- could anybody provide some guidance as to what kind of colleges accept students with similar ACT scores? My dream college is Cornell but right now I’m mostly looking at state schools such as Geneseo, Binghamton. Really want to find a school with a great acceptance rate in veterinary school, maybe a feeder for Cornell? If anybody knows of colleges that fit my ACT and GPA while also keeping debt low and helping me get into vet school I would be eternally grateful!
GPA 3.9 UW 4.0 W
ACT
Composite: 30
Reading: 33
English: 32
Science: 29
Math: 24
(Yes I know it’s a 29.5,I’m very lucky)
I also got a 32 on the writing portion. This is lower then I had hoped for, I tend to write pretty well but…

Retake and try to get it up to at least a 32, unless you are a URM, in which case a 30 should be okay

Are you wanting to stay in NY? If interested at all in a PA school many kids like, check out Juniata. I’d add Penn St too, but I’m not sure what your financial position for college is. Juniata isn’t bad with aid. Penn St is.

Your ACT score is fine for 99% of schools. It’s a really good score anywhere except with some posters on here. The only exception is your math score is pretty low. I’d suggest reviewing a bit of your math skills as that will be important in college with some of your pre-vet classes.

There is no single school that is good/bad for pre-vet. It will all be about how well you do at college.

@Creekland ok so you wouldn’t reccomend re taking for admission into Bing or Geneseo? Is a 30 too low for those?

But I’ve heard that Findlay has over twice the rate of acceptance, too.

If you can get your math score to come up on practice tests (dusting off some math neurons or learning material you missed along the way), then I would recommend retaking the ACT.

A 30 score is respectable for either Bing or Geneseo. It looks to make Bing a match and Geneseo a pretty good bet, almost an admissions safety.

A higher score could make you a better candidate for merit aid (if those schools offer any - I’m unfamiliar with the nuts and bolts of SUNY schools), but better knowledge of math overall (obtained from studying to get a better math score) will help you in college - incredibly important for pre-vet stats.

I can’t say I’m familiar with Findlay at all - not even the name. This doesn’t mean it’s bad!

Chances are, any school can get you into a vet school IF you do the work necessary while there. Again, brushing up on math skills now will help (with or without retesting).

^The SUNYs definitely do offer merit.

@usualhopeful
That’s interesting, whenever I ran net price calculators for SUNYs they only requested financial information… Unless you’re referring to t

He STEM scholarship…

Thanks @Creekland !
Findlay is a smallish private university in Ohio. If you don’t live around that region, it’s unlikely you’ve heard about it. It’s well known for its Animal Sciences Program, which (after talking to an admissions officer) they claim is the best in the nation percentage wise…

Not all schools include merit calculators in their net price calculators.

@Creekland
Financial position is weird. Parents made very good incomes ( 130k combined) up until the January of my sophomore year, both quit jobs and started buisness. So income from then on is 0$ but some income will be on my FAFSA. Either way, my parents made it pretty clear I’m in charge of paying for close to all of college, so leaning towards SUNYs. However, Findlay did say they could give me around 98000 over the course of four years ( tuition+room=42000) based on current stats alone (30 ACT and 4.0 W GPA)

@usualhopeful
Interesting… I’ll have to do some digging to see if Geneseo or Bing offer any merit. I don’t have very high opinions of the rest of the SUNY system with the exception of Stony Brook haha

I’d scratch Penn St from my suggestions (for financial reasons), but definitely take a look at Juniata to see if you like it. More than a few from our area who are interested in animal/wildlife/vet studies head there.

If your parents’ income is below a certain level, consider applying HEOP to some schools - if they select you, it means free tuition and a very nice package to help pay room&board. It’s VERY hard to get, of course, but it’s worth a shot. That’d make Cornell CALS a possibiliy for you. :slight_smile:
With a 30, you’re good for Geneseo and Binghamton. But do look at other schools depending on your EFC - if your EFC is low, your total costs at the 100% need colleges would be very low.

Calculate efc using your parents 2015 income (andcurrent income if the incomes have changed a lot):
https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/pay-for-college/paying-your-share/expected-family-contribution-calculator

Then, run the NPC on:
Skidmore
Cornell CALS
Fordham
Barnard (if you’re a girl)
Hamilton
as well as SUNY Bing and SUNY Geneseo.
