I just got off of the waitlist at JMU! I am so torn. JMU was my number one throughout the whole admissions process but once I got waitlisted I looked more into udel. I found a major at udel that I 100% love. Jmu doesn't offer this major. The decision seems obvious.. to go with the major that I love. But jmu is my absolute dream school and I love everything about it.. the people, the campus, the safety, the location, the price. When I visited I honestly felt that cheesy feeling that I was "at home." When I visited udel I didn't get that same feeling but I knew I would have fun there and get a good education. I am out of state for both schools. JMU is cheaper. I think I have two weeks to decide. Help!

I think you should go to JMU unless there isn’t a major that would work almost as well for you. If it’s not too personal, may I ask what the major is at UD?

Thank you for the input! I will PM you the major. Jmu doesn’t really offer an equivalent :(

I personally think you should go to JMU. Can you PM me the majors also, Im curious. You have to think of these two majors, which do you like more. And then you have to look at money and academically which is a better school for the major. I think if it really is your dream school, then you should go there. But hey I’d love to have ya at Udel!

I’ll actually just say it on here… the major at UD is health behavior science. It is something I am truly interested in and can imagine a happy life in this field. Jmu offers dietetics and health promotion but they are very different. However jmu is $7,000 cheaper so I’m thinking about $30k all together. Makes a big difference! Especially when I am taking almost all of it in loans. Ah there are pros and cons on each side

If you can procede with your career plans by taking the major available at JMU without having to go to Graduate School then JMU would be the way to go. If you would have to go to Graduate School following JMU to be able to procede with your career plans then UD would be the way to go (you probably would have to pay more then $30,000 to go to Graduate School). This is assuming you could directly procede with your career plans by completing UD and not have to go to Graduate School.

^ proceed…than $30,000… :)

That is a very good point. I know it is early to think about this but I think I would like to go to grad school regardless. Unless I get a good job offering. I’m not positive about what exactly I’m hoping to do yet so I don’t know if grad school is required.

Do you think future employers would choose a udel grad over a jmu? My dad keeps saying they would choose udel… but I really feel like it would be pretty equivalent

As to your question about employers, I think that JMU has a great reputation in its region but may be less well known than U Del in other parts of the country. U Del has more of a national reputation. So it may depend on where you plan to work in the future.

I would really give some thought to the practicalities of travel from your home to JMU vs. U Del. You mentioned in another thread that U Del is 3 hours from home and JMU is 6 hours. If you are the type of person who does not plan to come home often this may not be an issue for you, but if you expect to be able to come home frequently I think U Del is a better choice.

UD may be even more expensive than you are currently thinking. Those Winter Term sessions are over $5300 each and maybe $10k if you go away. I gather many people do them. We are pretty much figuring it in as part of the yearly cost or at least figuring our D will do it two times. If not what will you be doing in January, it’s too short a time to get a job.

I don’t know anything about your intended major but most people’s first jobs don’t exactly match their major. What you’ve done with a major is shown your interest and gotten some background. You may be able to get even more grounding in it by internships and summer jobs. So you may still get the same place at JMU which you appear to really like and want to attend.

Jobwise JMU is known and respected in its area.

I have to say though, that I applaud your maturity in approaching the decision weighing your desire to go to JMU along with major and career choice.

There are a lot of internship opportunities available. I

Yes, I hope that internships are available, zoosermom, and I think the likelihood that the OP will be able to find one or two correlating to his major if he attends UD make it even more attractive attending. But I’m not so sure they are easily available to first or even second year students. My two prior college kids weren’t able to find summer internships until their Junior years. And available or not, I still think that many if not most UD students will wind up either taking a course opn campus or away at least once or twice during their career. That’s $10 -15k extra.

At any rate all I meant to do was point out that the likely costs of Winter term need to be taken into account if money is one issue in the decision process.

Just want to let you guys know I ended up choosing jmu. They offer a major in health science with a concentration in health assessment and promotion. So almost the same and I am beyond excited to be a Duke! It was hard to turn down Delaware but I know I made the right choice. Thank you for all of the help.

Congrats Hey you! My son goes to JMU, from NY, and will be a senior next year. We have nothing but praises for the school. Go DUKES!
