Got some mail the other day that I just noticed 2 minutes ago were from colleges. I don't recall giving away my information in any papers, but I do remember filling out the section in the PSAT that was optional, asking for my email. Is there a connection here? I thought they only gave info by email.

The vast majority of ds's mail has been snail, not e-, mail. The new deluge hasn't started this year, but I'm looking at a huge box of stuff that he got starting last year, when he scored a 193 as a sophomore.

Oh. Okay, tnx. I wanted to make sure that my private information didn't leak, and that what is happening is normal.

If you accidentally fill in one of those optional bubbles, CB might "sell" some of your info to colleges that request it (those colleges will NOT know your scores). I'm pretty sure you can change the setting on your CB account.

I'm a junior and I noticed that more college mail has been arriving..as well as emails.

Is this because of my recent PSAT score (pretty sure I made NMSF)?
Or from last years? (got mail last year as well..the score wasn't as high though)
Should I expect a lot more than last year?

Well, since I didn't take the PSATs last year, and I'm still receiving mail, I assume it's from this year.

Yes, it is from the PSAT. College Board calls this the Student Selection Service. Colleges can obtain lists of sophomores and juniors, and have the list defined by specified parameters (above a certain score, major preference, zip code, etc). The flood is just beginning.

I've got a large (maybe 10 inches high) stack from last year ready to be used for firewood.

This thread inspired son and I to go through that box this morning and make two: one box of definite no's and one box of yes and maybe materials.

And where is my S's college lovefest mail?! He requested it this year and his College Board account is set to "lemme get mail," but so far, nothing, nada, zilch!!

C'mon, colleges, show the kid some affection, let him know that somewhere, some admissions office wants him to apply!!

that's a big surprise!
