Just started a major EC

Today, I was approached by my English teacher about being the editor-in-chief of our school’s literary magazine. He is hoping to completely overhaul the publication and is looking for me to do very much of it myself. He thinks I have some sort of creative impulses that will manage to turn the magazine around, so he has left me to select the pieces that will be entered, organize them in any way I want (theme, author, whatever) and create a new layout. I have about five or six people working under me. This is going to be a very significant time investment on my part (at least ten hours a week). Should I inform the colleges that I have applied to of this development? I have applied to Yale, Dartmouth, Amherst, Vassar, and Wesleyan. Would they want to know?

I would say no.

Not sure - it does seem like a significant responsibility and time commitment. The teacher must have selected you because of your creativity, management skills, etc. - qualities that are probably already apparent in your apps. How about sending a brief 1 or 2 paragraph letter about the new project (and what you're doing with it) with your mid-year grades?

That's good advice. Your counselor will be sending out your mid-year grade. May be your English teacher can write a brief note on your behalf and have it attached with the mid-year report (there is usually a place for the counselor to include additional comments).
