:K Guys, don't think Rutgers is bad.:K

jwblue: Thanks for the luck ... and I do like smaller colleges, universities, and LACs ... except, not too small (haha). I all just depends.

and out of curiousity, who was your favorite philosophy professor? or perhaps do you have a philosophy book recommendation? I'm always looking for decent philosophy books...

hey, don't know much about RU's philosophy department. but i got into both NYU as a stern scholar and a full ride at RU (i'm instate). so here's my 2 cents:
if i decide to do business- i'd probably choose stern (especially if i got scholarship money). but if you're considering something science related and you live in NJ, i definitely reccomend RU. i did an internship over the summer at the material science building and i was highly impressed by their entire engineering department (as well as the other science departments). also, my dad did post-PhD research as a chemist there. basically, i think RU science is really strong and worth the money (as opposed to paying 40k+).
as for the RU honors program debate- i know someone from the RU honors program that was recruited by Deutsche Bank, which is probably just as good as a Stern graduate. so i guess in the end it depends on how motivated you are and how hard you work. but a great school like RU will allow you to reach your goals as long as you put forth the effort.
as for it being underrated- this is absolutely true. i think this is so because it's such a huge school. if people looked at the new brunswick and piscataway campuses alone, then they would regard it w/a lot more esteem (not to disrespect the other campuses). regardless, i truly believe it's one of the best state schools and stands tall amongst private colleges.

Hey everyone-
I'm excited to be goign to Rutgers this fall and thought i'd post since I agree so much with the thread title.
I chose to attend Rutgers this fall over Haverford.

Rutgers is a great school and people don't give it enough credit, a lot of people probably woudlnt understand my choice.

The reality of the situation is that we'll get the SAME, yes, the SAME education at Rutgers as NYU, or any other elite ivy league school (unless of course RU doesn't ahve your major, which may pose a potential problem)

I feel sorry for those who feel otherwise, as this belief is just so skewed and incorrect. People feel as though they must attend a top, well known school to justify all their hard work in high school. But why?...

Really smart people do choose to go to Rutgers, especially the Honors program- because Rutgers is a good school!!!

oh and also-

"If I was majoring in Philosophy, and could attend Rutgers for free, I would not go to NYU for $180,000, when the programs are equal."

I completely agree that unless you are 100% set on going to NYU because you absolutely LOVE the city/the school, that you should consider Rutgers

"Then by your logic, a prospective philosophy major should pick Rutgers over Princeton (tied for #1 in philosophy with NYU and Rutgers U), and just about every other elite private school in the country as well. This clearly is not going to happen because picking a college is so much more than just picking the one thats great in one particular department that one is interested in. Once in college, many students also decide to pursue a major different from the one they intended while in high school."

I'm a little upset over this reply however-
You make it sound like a foreign idea that someone could turn down an elite school for Rutgers! and thats just RIDICUlOUS
if thats what you truly think, than i have nothing to say except that I feel sorry for you and your values!

Rutgers has a better philosophy department than Princeton and NYU combined imho, top 5 of the top 10 philsophers of the world are from Rutgers. I went to one Bruce W. Wilshire's and must say I was just amazed. Good luck

"who was your favorite philosophy professor?"

Nagel

As for book reccs., thats too broad of a question; it all depends on what areas you're interested in.

"You make it sound like a foreign idea that someone could turn down an elite school for Rutgers! and thats just RIDICUlOUS

You've made the mistake of thinking my statement was value-laden when it clearly was not. Facts are facts, for the most part, Rutgers will not be chosen over elite private schools, especially when money is not a concern, or when the private school gives a really good finaid package (check the Revealed Preferences study for data cross admits).

I am choosing Rutgers over Vanderbilt but it is in part due to finances so both of you are right. And I don't really think that I'm sacrificing too much academically to go to Rutgers.

yeap im going to Rutgers over JHU/Northwestern/UVA, so really your statement isnt true jwblue. Yea, my decision was partially financially based. If all of those schools would cost the same I'd go to a diff school probably just b/c of the reputation and the people that go there. But if i really thought that id be getting a better education at one of the schools i was admitted to, i'd go there even with the financial consideration. however, I'm pretty confident that espescially w/ rutgers honors i'll def be getting the same level of education at rutgers.

so, woot go scarlet knights ;-)

Nice to hear that your going to rutgers as well supermitt and that I'm not the only one choosing it over a big name school. What do you plan to major in?

im thinking biochemistry... i put down my major as chemistry everywhere but right now i think my mind has changed

well see though haha
