Kelley Classes for Spring 2010 Registration

<p>[As a new/inexperienced forum user, I incorrectly posted this as a reply under an existing thread earlier this afternoon. After realizing my mistake, and as I didn't know if I would get responses following that route, I am posting my request for help here.]</p>

<p>My son plans to apply for admission to Kelley for Fall 2010.</p>

<p>This semester he's taking Math 119, Eng W131, BUS K201, and a gen ed class [total 12 credits].
He has 7 credits [non-business courses] coming into IU.
So, he should only need 12 credits for Spring semester to remain a full-time student and meet Kelley's minimum # of credit hours for admission.</p>

<p>He's considering the following classes for next semester and needs help determining which will be the best for his GPA ... and if it matters which teachers to select [or avoid]. </p>

<p>He has a univ. div. counselor, can't get into see a walk-in Kelley advisor until after the 20th, and would like to register before then.</p>

<p>Any suggestions?</p>

<p>Math 118
Bus X201/202 or Econ E/S201
Bus X100 or Bus G100 [either could be used as a 4th class for admission ... even though neither is required, could possibly help with 4 course admission GPA ... if not, no harm done?]
Tele T160 [or Psy-P101, Soc-S100, Clas-C205)</p>

<p>Is you son in Hutton Honors College? Some of the courses you listed are only open to freshmen that are in Hutton.</p>

<p>Your son is pretty much guaranteed admission to Kelley if he gets all B’s.

<p>Given your post, I would take something like this.</p>

<p>A100 1 cr.
BUS X100 3 cr.
BUS X104 3 cr.
PSY P101 with Sklar 3 cr.
Another gen ed class 3 cr.</p>

<p>He needs BUS X100 if not taking finite math in order to get into Kelley. X100 should easily be a B, whereas finite is very tough. And the competition in finite math is much more difficult than M119 calculus. So finite in the spring would be kind of a risk and should be avoided if he has already taken M119.</p>

<p>He should take BUS 104. Craig, Fletcher, New, and Cox are all pretty good graders, and he should be able to get one of them, since he already has seven credits and a lot of freshmen don’t have credits yet. This class will be less work and easier grading than X201. At least 90% of the people who don’t drop the class get a B or higher from these profs.</p>

<p>PSY P101 psychology would be an easy B if he does the many opportunities for extra credit. Also the class has easy online quizzes for 1/6 of the grade.</p>

<p>Don’t really have any suggestions for the other gen ed class. POLS Y103 with Bianco might work, as he is a fair grader. Do not take Barbour for Y103.</p>

<p>Definitely a good idea not take more than 13 hours, given that A100 is pretty much the equivalent of a three-hour class in terms of work and stress.</p>

<p>Don’t take microeconomics yet, as it is a gpa killer, and he doesn’t need it yet. Take microeconomics next fall (or at a community college in the summer), then take G202 next spring. Also take finite next fall (or at a cc), as he will need it to register for ECON E370 next spring. </p>

<p>His course work will be tough sophomore year with the relatively easy and light course as a freshman, but at least he will be in Kelley. And he can always look to take some harder Kelley I-Core prerequisites at a community college in the summer. Among these, depending whether they are offered in your community college and whether they transfer to IU from your cc, are E201, L201, finite math, A201 and A202, and E202 (needed to graduate, but not for I-core).</p>

<p>Regarding this summer, how would you find out in advance whether a course from a community college would transfer to IU? </p>

<p>Also, if he took A100 in Spring 2010 and ended up having to drop it [but still maintained the other 12 credits as recommended] would he still have a good chance for admission for Fall 2010? </p>

<p>I don’t think he would have a good chance to get in if he drops A100. He would probably have to reapply as a sophomore, and the sophomore pre I-Core classes are much more difficult than the ones people tend to take freshman year. He should take A100 first eight weeks, and then take it again second eight weeks if he needs to.</p>

<p>The credit transfer service website will tell you which courses transfer to IU from other colleges.</p>
