Kelley provides a sample business degree planning guide of what a student should take each year. Assuming no AP credits being transferred from high school, what’s the best order to take these required freshman courses, when considering getting acclimated to college life, studying, workload, etc…Which ones to take fall and which ones to take spring? Took calc, micro and macro in high school. Never took stats. Might be interested in the 3/2 program. While this may be discussed at the advisor session during orientation, would love to be prepared in advance.
Kelley DA sample first year is:
Eng Comp ENG-W 131
Bus Presentations BUS-C 104
Compass I BUS-T 175
Finite Math MATH M-118
Calculus MATH M-119
Computers in Business BUS-K 201
Basic Acct BUS A-100
Micro ECON-E 201
Gen Eds - for an additional 10 credits or so
It honestly doesn’t matter much what order you take them in. I suggest not taking both math classes in the same semester, but other than that, you should be fine with anything.
Compass is an easy A, but it has lots of annoying assignments that actually take a decent amount of time to finish.
Basic accounting skills doesn’t have any work at all, but 90% of your grade is based on 2 tests. To do well, you are probably going to need to study around 5 hours for each one, so plan accordingly. If you study enough, the material isn’t that hard, it’s more about recognizing all of the tricks.
Finite and calculus could be very easy if you are good at math and have seen some of the concepts, but they will probably be hard if you aren’t strong in math. It varies a lot from student to student.
Business presentations requires a lot of time, but grades easily.
K201 is about Excel and Access, and a lot of people find it to be somewhat challenging. Any Excel or Access experience would make it easier. The class is mostly about thinking logically.
Hopefully those descriptions help a little bit. I never took W131 at IU.
@SonnyDNJ This is probably how I would break it down. @iubaccounting is right. It doesn’t really matter too much. He has very good descriptions of what each class is like, so I would listen to his advice in terms of how to approach each course. I will add that I found ENG-W131 to be very easy and almost like a GPA booster, but that obviously depends on your own writing level. I came in with Micro credits, so I am not sure what that class is like. However, I have heard that the class can be rough. Might want to consider taking some of these classes over the summer and/or online. Hope this helps.
