My son got an email notifying him that he is one of the Kelley Scholars finalists and he should schedule for an on campus interview in February. We have a few questions for those who went through the process:

1) How many finalists are invited for interview? They only select about 10 winners, thus we are curious about the odds.
2) How does the Kelley Scholars interview like? Can someone describe the activities for the 2 day program?
3) By judging the nine Kelley Scholars from last year, it seems 8 out of 9 winners were from Indiana, and we are from OOS, thus we wonder if this program favors in state students.

Congratulations to your son! I can’t answer your specific questions relating to the interview process, but can tell you that in each of the past 3 years, there has been one OOS Kelley Scholar. The odds are long, but there’s only one way to find out if your son can be the one for 2010!

I noticed the following link talking about the interview for Wells Scholar. I think that it may be similar to Kelley Scholar Interview based upon your description.

My son decided to go for the interview. We are from OOS, the odds are long (very very long :-)). He has not visited IU yet, any sugegstions on how to spend the 1.5 days in IU in addition to the interviews?

Midwest…you are SO modest! Your son has INCREDIBLE stats and is a HIGHLY qualified applicant. Well done the both of you. And thanks for always being so polite and generous on CC. And most of all…good luck.

midwestDad–congrats to you and your son and Good Luck with the interviews.

Will you be staying at the Union or elsewhere?

Whether it’s just you or your son, take a walk from the Sample Gates down Kirkwood to the Courthouse Square. You might even take a walk through the Courthouse–Some great old architecture and a beautiful ceiling. On the return walk to campus, turn to the south at Lincoln. Between Lincoln and Indiana (the western side of campus) there are numerous ethnic restaurants. You might spot someplace interesting for lunch or dinner.
If you have some time alone, it’s always interesting just to take a seat anywhere in the Union and do some people watching. If you’re lucky someone might be playing the piano in the “fireplace” lounge. Another free morning or afternoon can be spent wandering around the IU Art Musuem. The musuem is free except for any special exhibits. The Lilly Library typically has some sort of exhibit also. Many nights there is some sort of free music either at the Musical Arts Center (the MAC) or in Simon Hall. I am assuming that a tour of campus will be part of the interview period. If not, grab a map and wander through campus or schedule a tour with the admissions office. Check the idsnews.com site before you come to campus. There is an events calendar there. I hope you and your son will keep in mind that, like most places, the campus is not at it’s most beautiful in the winter months. At least that’s my opinion.

First of all, congratulations to your son! The Kelley Scholars program is AMAZING. I’ve met a bunch of them, both in my class and in classes above me, and each and every one of them is exceptionally intelligent, very involved on campus, and very friendly! The process is competitive, yes, but to get invited for an interview is considered a huge accomplishment in and of itself. If nothing else, take it as an opportunity to meet some of his potential future classmates and have a good amount of time to explore the campus.

As rrah said, do keep in mind that it isn’t AS beautiful here in the winter months; however, the campus is still amazing. A friend and I were just talking about that today actually, and we are still in awe that we are privileged enough to attend school at such a beautiful campus!

Definitely check out the union, and I would say just generally walk around the campus to get a feel for daily life here. Don’t hesitate to stop students and ask for directions or tips, I would expect most everyone would be MORE than happy to help! I would also recommend sitting in on some classes at Kelley…they might already have things planned for you, but if not, PM me and I can give you some tips on a couple classes you might want to hit!

In addition to considering attending one of the events at the Indiana University Auditorium or Music Center, you might also consider going east about 25 miles and attending a performance at the Brown County Auditorium–they usually do some very odd and humorous artistic performances of various types.

I’d also consider attending an Indianapolis Colts football playoff game (but good luck getting tickets).

There are also a few small wineries in the area, and a real nice golf course on the Northeast side of the campus. There are also lots of campus events–such as visiting chefs serving different types of food at the Art Museum or visiting professors talking on unusual topics at the school or Student Union. Lastly, the IU basketball arena is always worth a visit–even though the basketball team is not up to its usual great level this particular year. There is an interesting lake with some parks on the SE side of town–although this is more of a springtime or summer type of thing.

Congratulations on getting a Kelley Scholar Interview! I sent in my SSA form in November, but i didnt hear anything back about the scholars intervew. Beat the odds for us OOS and show them how amazing you are.
