Kelley School Admissions

My son finished his freshman year and has applied to the Kelley School of Business. He seems fairly confident about acceptance, but I wonder. Here's how he ended the freshman year:

First semester GPA 3.4
Second semester GPA 3.013

Cumulative first year GPA 3.2

Kelley required courses:

English Composition W131 B+
Calculus M119 B+
Business Admin X100 B
Finite math M118 C+

Other courses

Intro Microeconomics E201 A
Evolution of Earth G104 A-
Intro Am. Politicis Y103 A-
Intro Psychology P101 B
Criminal Justice P100 B
American History H 105 B
Basic Accounting A100 C+

Should I start to prepare him for disappointment? Or, am I just an overly pessimistic parent?

I am in roughly the same situation as your son. If you read my thread, you’ll notice how similar our applications actually are (in terms of GPA and semester trends):

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/indiana-university-bloomington/478473-strictness-regular-kelley-admission.html

The only thing that could be problematic on your son’s application is his admission GPA. The three grades used for his admission GPA (M118, M119, and X100) compute to a admission GPA of 2.867. However, a few users on this board have mentioned people they know getting grades in the sub-B range (even in admission courses) and still being admitted to Kelley. As far as a reasonable expectation for your son, I have no idea what to expect; there has been much discussion about the selectivity for the undergraduate program and how it may have changed dramatically the previous school year. Personally, I would say that your son is just as likely to be admitted as I am. The most comforting thing I can say to you at this point is that your son is not the only one in this situation - I face the same dilemma.

Like Wavarian said, they like to see a B average overall–and the three course average is 2.867, and the four course average is 2.975.

Still, they might give your a little bit of a break with his 3.2 overall–and the four course average being only .025 lower than expected, as long as he has been active at the school and has some good extracurricular activies to go along with the classes. If he doesn’t have some decent extracurriculars, then I’d say he’s unlikely to be admitted, especially considering the downward trend (yes, I know it’s only a one-semester trend). It’s just the way they judge the students.

If he doesn’t make it (not trying to be negative here, but just planning for possibilities), remember than you can continue to take business courses and then see if they will let you reapply under Option II, which is listed here:

[Kelley School of Business Undergraduate 2006-2008 Online Bulletin: Undergraduate Program](http://www.indiana.edu/~bulletin/iub/business/2006-2008/program.shtml#op2)

The key, of course, is not to get any grades below a C then in all the rest of the I-Core prerequisites, and to get them all done within the next one year, so that he’ll get invited to reapply.

P.S. Indiana does tend to follow the numbers a lot–my own son had a 3.586 GPA after year one at the college and applied for the honors society (back when you only needed a 3.6 to get in, not a 3.7 like you need now), and was turned down. Their comment was simple–he had a 3.59 rounded, and a 3.60 was the requirement–no exceptions. Disappointing, but understandable I guess.

Good luck to your son.
