Kent & The Hill School

Opinions?
Are these schools considered not as good?
Chances?

Not as good as WHAT? Not as good as your present school? Not as good as 99% of the other schools in the country?

other boarding schools ^^

I suggest u come back on 10-March: Decision Day.

When u see the enormous number of people wailing about being rejected or WLā€™d at the most highly-pursued schools, then you will appreciate Kent & Hill a helluva lot more.

They are only considered not as good by snobs.

Great teachers take jobs at schools based on where the job openings are the year weā€™re looking, where our spouses work, what the pay is like, etc. Great students take acceptances at schools often based on proximity to family, campus culture, architecture, etc. Kent and Hill both have some great students and great teachers.

Where the snobs score their points is that both Kent and Hill accept students with a wider range of abilities. The top students could succeed happily at any boarding school, but the bottom students may need more academic support. If you are in the top quarter of the class, you will be surrounded by smart classmates and fantastic teachers who care. You will experience a top boarding school, and your fellow honors students will go on to Top Colleges. True, the guy down the hall from you or the kid on your sports team may not be an academic powerhouse, but I think it would be dumb to call the whole school ā€œbadā€ because of it.

There are around 300 boarding schools in the US. By those standards, Hill and Kent are in the top tier. Heck, ignore all but 100 of the boarding schools in the states and Hill and Kent are still in the top 30, making them top schools in sane peopleā€™s minds. You will never convince the snobs and the point hounds that schools beyond the ā€œtop 5ā€ (a ranking no one can agree on anyway) are worth anything. But boarding school teachers and administrators tend to consider the top 30 to all be good schools.

I was very impressed with Kent when my son and I toured. The students were friendly and interesting, and I felt that the admissions office was interested in my child as a whole person and that was not a feeling I had from every school where we looked. I agree with GMTā€™s comment and wish that people would expand their searches to include schools like Kent that may not have the name recognition beyond the Northeast that some other schools have. Kids are lucky to go to Kent and I would have been happy to send my child there. P.S. Kent determined that we did not meet their criteria for financial aid but they offered a very generous ā€œmeritā€ scholarship that we were not even aware of.

Trust me, the most pursued schools have their fair share of dud teachers. GMTson has had a few incredibly lame-O first-year teachers that were not asked to return the following year. And the kids there are not all rocket scientists nor all nice.

I heard that the Hill School used to be a ā€œtop tierā€ school, but now itā€™s not. Why is this?

What is used to make those claims is very subjective and really not substantive. Hill is an excellent school. If your goal is to get an excellent education at a highly respected institution, Hill will serve you well.

Theyā€™re both excellent. Iā€™m applying to Kent, and itā€™s one of my favorites.

As for chances, the acceptance rate is like 39, so higher than other schools, but itā€™s still up there.

as much as i love st paul + lawrencevill + hotchkissā€¦i LOOOOOOVE kent schoolā€¦i guess its a hidden gem school but the students were soooooo nice friendly and everybody said hi to me
and my interviewer kept in touch with me after my visit remembering every nitty gritty detail i told him in my interview so i though that was really nice of him even my dad liked it he said it looks like a family and he wouldnā€™t think twice about sending me there because he knows ppl will take care of me

Yup, one of the reasons I want to go there. Even though my mother would like more ā€˜prestigiousā€™ schools.

I got into both!!!

kent suxxxxx

Ugh. Iā€™m ReallyTired of looking at your posts.

I drove from NYC to Kent for an early morning interview. The interviewer met with my D and then decided that she was not going to meet with me due to fact that she had to go feed her kids. I was very disrespected. I also noticed that he practice room in the piano area were exclusively filled with asians, which is a turn off because my son is a pianist and I donā€™t want him to think that his school is only for international students. Also the food was TERRIBLE!!! By far the worst food of any boarding school we visited.

Iā€™m sad to hear that! @pachucoray Was the food really that bad?
