Kenyon ED II people

Just got the expected rejection letter today, not a big surprise, but nevertheless I’m still a little disappointed and sad. No tears or drama involved  Well I guess it’s not a big deal anyways, it was apparently just not meant to be. Maybe the US is just not my place. For those who got accepted- enjoy it and appreciate it, for those who got deferred good luck and courage, because i can imagine how hard the waiting can be, for those who got rejected like I was, we will sure be happy somewhere else :)

haha, well, i was deferred too. Its better than a rejection though, i suppose

What were your stat, Ginious? And FA status?

+1
same here.

Also…should we answer something back to deferral e-mail? Out of politeness or something?

MarieM, you might want to acknowledge the deferral, reiterate your strong interest in Kenyon, and convey new information, if any, that could strengthen your application.

keylyme, actually, my stats are pretty much abysmal. I’m actually genuinely surprised that i was deferred rather than straight out denied. You see, during 9th and 10th grade, i honestly didn’t care about my grades, and it wasn’t until 11th grade that i actually started putting forth an effort.
anyways, enough of that.
These are my basic stats…
ACT: 28 - on the low side, i realize.
SAT: 1720 - This, im very much ashamed of.
GPA: 3.02 unweighted - 9th and 10th grade really brought me down a lot.
3.59 Weighted
AP Tests Passed so far: 4
Including my Senior, ill have taken 11 AP classes, 1 in 10 grade, 5 in 11th grade, and 5 this year. So i don’t know if that might help some.
Ive also taken a math class at a community college.
I’m also involved in some after school activities.
Those are my basically my stats.
The High School i come from is also considered one of the lowest and worst schools, testing wise, as a whole.

Like i said, im surprised i was deferred. Its probably helped that i had a good interview and that ive shown interest by calling the school and asking them a lot of questions, and maybe my supplement essays also helped.
Financial aid wise, i need a lot. My family can not really contribute much. My EFC on fafsa was 2K

I was wondering, can/should i justify/explain a grade that i received this semester that wasnt exactly good? I got a C for my calculus class. The teacher was excessively absent, and thats not an exaggeration. He only came for about 30-45 days the whole of the first semester so i couldn’t do much to raise my grade. So much in fact that the school gave us a new teacher and hired tutors from a State college to come and help us on Saturdays to make up for the lost time.

On the common app there is a section for reasons why your grades might not be what they could. I would assume you could give a call in and talk to them about that because it will do two things. 1) It will let them know that you do care about your grades and your unweighted GPA is not a reflection of you and 2) it will show them you are that interested in Kenyon that you are calling them to let them know about the grade

…and an upward trend is a good thing! I would definitely write to them with an explanation and follow that up with a call to admissions to make sure they received it. Kenyon seems to place a lot of weight on communication and interest expressed by applicants.

Yeah that makes sense. Ill definitely let them know then. I’m still trying to fix a missing grade from my first semester so i havent gotten around to sending my 1st semester grades yet. I will for sure follow it up with an e-mail when i send my transcript, and ill more than likely call the admissions office as well. Having to wait until April 1st is going to feel like such a long time! Thanks for the advice!
