Kenyon Merit scholarships

does anyone know when the scholarship finalists for the honor scholarships are notified?

My daughter applied for the honor scholarship. I assumed the scholarship recipients would be notified when admissions decisions are sent in April, but I don't know for sure. I don't think there are "finalists" - just awards.

Actually, for the honors scholarships, they fly the finalists up for the weekend for an interview and to show them the school, in case they haven't visited the campus. So I was hoping someone knew when the finalist weekend was. (I got this info from one of the admission people last year.)

By the way, we are not assuming to have a child who will be a finalist...we are just hoping for the chance!

My son is a freshman at Kenyon and has a merit scholarship. He was flown to Keynon last year Mid-Feb. with the other finalists. I think he received his award in March.

kjl2124 - How is your son enjoying Kenyon so far?

My daughter was invited to come for an interview for the Hispanic scholarship. The interviews are the weekend of the 25th of February and the following Monday. We heard today via email.

We got the email today inviting him up to interview for the honors scholarship
the last weekend in Feb. Good luck everyone!

MotherOfTwo - My son loves Kenyon. He has made quite a few friends and really enjoys his classes. We live in a very large city and being in rural Ohio seems to be fine with him. Kenyon did a great job of making him feel wanted. The honor scholarship he received was substantial and for four years. Good Luck, its a wonderful school.

My daughter applied ED and was fortunate to receive a Distinguished Academic Scholarship (which is less than an Honor Scholarship). She also applied for the Honor Scholarship, but I wasn't holding out very high hopes for it. Good luck to everyone who is a Finalist!
kjl124 - I am very glad to hear that your son loves Kenyon, has made friends, and enjoys his classes. I hope my daughter does the same next year!

My daughter received a letter notifying her that she was not a finalist but;

"Although you have not been chosen as a finalist, I want to emphasize that the scholarship committee was quite impressed with your application. We would be fortunate, indeed, to have a student with your record of achievement and involvement in the Kenyon Class of 2009."

Do you think it means she'll be accepted?

yes, i think so
Congratulations !!!

I think so too! And also, she might still receive one of the lesser scholarships which don't have a separate interview and application process.

We've got our fingers crossed. She was waitlisted at Macalester and is very nervous.

I wish her the best of luck. It is a very stressful time for these kids!

SRMom3 - You can never predict these things with 100% certainty but based on relative selectivity a Macalester waitlist lines up pretty well with a Kenyon acceptance.

She just got accepted to Grinnell with a merti scholarship. I would have thought Grinnell would be harder to get into than Macalester, it has higher SAT's and is higher ranked. I guess the difference is the number of people willing to go live in the middle of Iowa versus St. Paul.

Congratulations on your Ds acceptance to Grinnell. I have two friends who have Ds there and they really like the school.

Those ratings are more a function of visibility, selectivity and maybe financial resources as they are anything else. Grinnell is penalized for being in Iowa. Grinnell, Macalester and Carleton are penalized for not being in the Northeast. But the academic differences among Kenyon, Carleton, Macalester, Grinnell and other top LACs are not that great. Social climates and student body makeup vary more.

Keep us posted. Good luck!

I got accepted to Kenyon as a distinguished scholar and a soccer recruit. Any other distinguished scholars or soccer recruits?

My daughter was accepted ED 1 with a Distinguished Academic Scholarship (but she is definitely not a soccer recruit :) ) Where are you from, and do you think you will be attending Kenyon next year?
