Kind of missing out on EC activities

Well, first off I am a high school sophomore from AK. I am an asian immigrant (non citizen), family aren't wealthy or anything, my parents are both grad students.

I have done mathcounts for 3 years, 6-8th. State participant twice.

I pretty much spaced out on activities last year, i did about 20 hours of volunteering for key club, other than that nothing else.

Basically i spent about 6 hours everyday playing World of Warcraft and watch tv ^o^

Since I wanted to get into a good school, I decided to pick up on my activities this year. I started playing tennis this year, and made varsity team. And I m planning to do about 100 hour of volunteering (I m already signed up with Mathcount coaching, that will run until early april)

-

I really want to get into a good college, people have told me on this board that my grades are okay, but i dont have a lot of accomplishments.

I dont want to do anything that make the colleges i want to apply to particularly like me, but at least i have to do something that could secure me a good college.

So now I need a passion, anything. I am particularly good in math (calc 2 student), and I am interested in social science stuff.

And I want to get into a Top 20 college studying economics or investment.

Any ideas ^o^

The only way you can get a passion is by examining yourself. Sorry to burst your bubble, but no one can tell you what your passion is.

I think that you are doing well, especially with mathcounts and the volunteering. But here are a few suggestions:
-try to find an economics program for the summer. check to see if any schools have a program on that or math in the summer.
-you made the varsity tennis team without experience? Either..a) your school isn't all that good and/or b) you have talent in tennis. Working hard in tennis could get you a scholarship or at least into a good school if you are good enough to be recruited.
-Just do what sounds fun to you, don't stress yourself out. If you love World of Warcraft, find out a way to use that passion for something constructive

hope this helps

I'm not sure if this is exactly a passion, but I recommend theater. It will show your dedication, give you plenty to do, and there's a place for everybody.

I would also recommend a research project. This can be in either math or science, or a combination of both. At this point, it's more plausible for you to complete a summer project and present it throughout the year. Ask your science teachers about this, and maybe start getting some ideas of what you want to research. You'll also need to find some good lab facilities in your area. These can be found at public universities, factories, and lab research firms.

Whoo AK!!! Sorry, I just had to say that! Just do whatever you think will be both interesting and worthwile for you.
