Hi, I am a DA to Kelley and I’m planning on rooming with a friend who isn’t in Kelley so I can’t room in the KLLC and we chose and honors floor instead. I was reading up on the KLLC and a lot of business students all have said to room at the KLLC. So I’m worried that I might be put at a disadvantage for not rooming in the KLLC. I also read that people who room together in the KLLC all get really close so will it be difficult for me to join in among other Kelley students living in the KLLC if I don’t room there? Overall, I’m just concerned about the issue that perhaps I should have chosen the KLLC over rooming with my friend. So is there a significant difference between those who room at the KLLC versus Kelley students who choose to go with regular dorms?
I can’t speak to the KLLC but here is what my D and her friend decided. They both will be going to IU and they both decided not to room together because they didn’t want it to come between them and ruin the friendship. They know of others who roomed with friends and it ruined the friendship. They decided each to find their own roommate and figured that if one of them had a bad experience then they could always use one another to “escape” or “take a break” if needed. My D is going to be in the Inspire LLC and she has already met a few other girls who are also going to be in Inspire via Group Chat. I think there is something to be said for a sense of community that comes with being with a group of similar interests.
The LLC’s do seem to give incoming Freshman a bit of a community that you might not get outside that, however you did say you chose an honors floor so perhaps if you decide to stay with the friend you can still build your network that way. Not everyone in Kelly is in the KLLC so you may just find others in Kelly on your honors floor as well.
I suggest living with your friend if you know the 2 of you will get along. Having a good roommate is way more important than living in the KLLC.
I am currently a sophomore in Kelley, and I got rejected from the KLLC last year (I still don’t understand why). Anyway, I lived in Wright, but I spent a ton of time in my friends’ rooms in the KLLC. You will definitely still make friends with the people in your classes and your dorm if you decide not to live in the KLLC.
The KLLC is a good opportunity, but I think Kelley overhypes it. They talk about “recruiting” events that only KLLC people can go to, but those are just sitting in a large room and listening to company reps give information about their companies. You aren’t going to get a job/internship directly from going to these events, and there are plenty of other opportunities outside the KLLC to network with companies.
It may be slightly easier to make friends in the KLLC, but I think the upside of rooming with your friend (assuming you want to room with them) is greater. Just leave your door open and talk to the people on your floor (which will probably be easier if you are already friends with your roommate) and you will make friends no matter where you live.
I’d also be happy to answer any questions you have about Kelley/IU in general.
Thanks for your response! I was getting kinda worried about this but your comment was really helpful and reassuring! I do have an additional question regarding orientation. Due to scheduling conflicts I can’t do orientation till mid-July so I was wondering if I’ll get stuck with suckier classes or class times since I will be scheduling later than most people?
You’re welcome. You will have fewer options that people who have orientation earlier, but they do a decent job of making sure core classes are available. Kelley will continue to add sections of business classes throughout orientation. You might get stuck with less than ideal times, but it should work out okay. Just be are prepared and have plenty of alternatives in case the schedule you plan with your advisor doesn’t quite work out.
@iubaccounting Hey so I am currently a junior will be applying for direct admission to Kelley this fall. I have a 30 ACT and a 4.79 GPA. I asked a current senior at Kelley if they thought they would raise the direct admissions standards this fall because I was worried the ACT requirement might jump to a 31 or 32. They said they highly doubted that would happen because a 30 and 3.8 is already highly selective, the direct admissions standards were raised in the past couple of years, and there are always rumors going around about them raising them. What are your thoughts?
@ngriff1220 I don’t really know - I don’t have any inside information or anything. Two things though:
- You are in a good position to petition even if they do raise the standards slightly because your GPA is way above the standard.
- I do know that IU had a major increase in applications this year due to switching to the common app. I think that is part of the reason why they raised the standard admission requirements, but I don't know for sure. It's possible that more applications will put upward pressure on the standards.
