Knives

What's the policy on knives? I wanna bring a small one, for cutting fruit. They're basically like plastic knives ... except not and sharper. I've used the one I might bring and they've broken down due to wear. Anyway, it's not a "dangerous" knife. Can I bring it?

A butcher knife should be fine.

The official rule states any knives with a blade less than 2.5 inches.

But in all honesty, no one will bother to check.

If you don’t show, no one will care.

Oh cool, I was wondering whether or not I should bring my X-Acto knives. Now I am definitely bringing them.

Wait. People are bringing knives to campus? It’s one thing if it is for cooking i or cutting fruit and another if everyone is wandering around campus with butcher knives.

Personally, I think that knives, guns and military recruiters should be banned from all college campuses.

yes Loche, forks are excellent for cutting steaks…

I’ve known people who kept bows and arrows in their closets…The Xacto knife and pliers I kept in my desk seem harmless in comparison…

So Loche, what would you do if some psycho shows up in your class with a gun and no one could defend him/herself because weapons are banned on campus?

i cant believe there’s military recruiters on Cal campus…

Well, it’s a public school after all.

So, seapumas, why do you think nobody at, say, Virginia Tech used the weapons which were not banned on campus to stop the shooting?

Oh right, because in reality weapons are almost never used to be a hero.

amarkov, please do your research before you start a debate. Before the Virginia Tech Massacre, Virginia Tech had a gun-free “safe zone” policy ensured that none of the other students or faculty would be armed and that as a result they were unable to stop the perpetrator.

And btw, what is your definition of a hero? So I guess you don’t consider George Washington a hero then since he used a musket.

No matter how hard we strive for peace, there will always be evil in the world. Banning weapons will only stop good people from being able to defend themselves and others.

Can we bring knives for defense since Berkeley is a pretty bad area…

George Washington was a pretty bad general/soldier, I don’t consider him a hero, but a good President.

This is a tangential:

Berkeley is a state institution and we do a lot of weapons and energy research, so the military, which is a sub-section of the state, has a right to be on a state campus. Also, there are people who do want to serve their country in a capacity of armed military service. It does not mean they are blood thirsty and want to kill (specifically in recent history, brown and/or the ‘wrong religion’) people. In fact, I’ve found many of the military personnel (family, friends, fraternity brothers) in my life to be as humane, compassionate, and loving, or even more so, than so-called pacifists who would rather see the military ejected from campus / the city itself through any means necessary and I myself am pretty liberal and eschew violence and conflict as much as possible. Huge fan of Marshall B. Rosenburgs “Non-Violent Communication: A Language of Life”. However, communication breaks down or the other side is so arrogant and bullheaded you need to kick them in their behinds a few times.

And Berkeley is not so bad that you need to carry around a knife. They do allow small cookery knives, but I would clear it with your R.A. or Co-Op director if you want to bring in more ‘advanced’ cutlery. I personally have no problem with a well balanced student having a set of KitchenMate knives if they want to cook their own meals. It’s the roommates or those students who may have antisocial tendencies I worry about. Also, as I said, I am firmly against carrying a weapon of any sort. If the individual who is trying to rob you finds out you are armed, they may assume that you were prepared and may take it to the next level. Oftentimes, being armed just provokes things further. DO NOT CARRY A WEAPON WITH YOU! Berkeley is not that bad of an area. It’s just urban. And with any urban area – carry yourself with a relaxed but confident demeanor and be constantly alert of your surroundings if you are concerned. And I’ve seen plenty of people I’d identify as ‘soft’, who have never ever had any problems.

“Personally, I think that knives, guns and military recruiters should be banned from all college campuses.”

I think they are all excellent additions to the community and foster a spirit of martial values, asperity, self-reliance and patriotism.

It’s not like high school where if somebody finds out you have a knife, you can get suspended. Just don’t go around flashing it or being dumb about it. If you know how to use it, having a pocketknife may be a good idea for self-defense, but don’t go around with it if you don’t because it will just as likely be used against you.

people, chill… bringing a knife to the dorms should be alright as long as you don’t hold it like you’re about to stab someone. How can anyone cook/peel fruit without a knife? Children shouldn’t play with knives, but we’re all adults, right?
