Weapon Policy

What is the weapon policy at Harvard?

State law prohibits carrying firearms or dangerous weapons on the grounds of schools, including universities. "Dangerous weapons" is defined rather broadly and includes nunchuks, throwing stars, and ballistic knives (sorry ninjas!), switchblades, blackjacks, and brass knuckles (sorry gangsters!) and just about anything else you could reasonably think of.

http://www.registrar.fas.harvard.edu/handbooks/student/PDF/Chapter%204/firearms_etc.pdf

Nunchucks!

If it's a weapon for Kung Fu or something like that, you're probably allowed to have it. Right?

Technically, if you get written permission from the head of the school, then you are allowed to have the weapon.

Damn. Well, who lives in or near Boston? Is it nice? Is crime low? Down here in ATL, even in suburban areas, you need a gun so you won't get killed (high crime rate :( )

What is ATL?:) I wanna do fencing....so can I keep a blade?

I will also be the first to develop lightsabers (BUZZ) so can I keep that too? ;)

ATL=Atlanta

faints OMG, apfreak. You live in Florida! For crying out loud, your people come up here for long weekends! LOL jk w/ ya

A fencing foil with a rounded point isn't really a dangerous weapon since it's pretty hard to hurt someone with it (I guess you could poke an eye out).

Because Massachusetts has strict gun control laws (as the highway sign proudly announces: "Welcome to Massachusetts--you're more likely to live here!") assault with a firearm is pretty rare; I can recall one or two cases of students robbed at gunpoint, but most of the more serious crimes are the kinds weapons wouldn't prevent: thefts of bikes or unattended valuables.

LOL! Gun control? That's HILARIOUS! Oh, wait, you were serious. LOL jk

We have gun control laws in the City of Atlanta, but criminals don't follow them. The police are corrupt. The suburbs are forever-expanding, and that's one big reason why. In one suburb, Kennesaw, you're actually required by law to own a gun. Though, they have little crime (go figure).

Well, it may not be the laws, but MA does have the lowest gun-related death rate in the US. (3.02 gun-related deaths per 100,000 people per year, versus the national average of 10.35.)

Oh, I was just kidding.

But, you have opened an interesting discussion. Cities in the South and Pacific-West tend to have more crime with and without guns. These cities also tend to be warmer in the winter. IDK, perhaps some connection? Could ability to be outside in the winter correlate with crime?

Are paintball guns considered firearms under Mass law?

justforgetme,

Paintball guns are smoothbore arms capable of discharging a pellet, so it sounds to me like they would fall under this restriction.

Ridiculous.

GUNS ARE NOT ALLOWED. (its a good thing they arent)
BOSTON ISNT ATLANTA. (thank god)
END OF TOPIC.

???

Calm down.

me? calm down?

weapons? honestly!! how can someone discuss that.
ok ok i will calm down
:D
