I’ve been surrounded by Asians my whole life (Asian church, asian friends, school with a lot of asians), so when I saw that SLO only has an 11% asian population I got kind of scared. But I’ve decided to go to SLO and try to slowly break out of the Asian bubble I’ve been in my whole life. However, I’m not trying to go from 0 to 100 real quick so I was wondering if there are any good Korean American/Asian American clubs, groups, associations or churches at SLO.
Also, I was given the Cal Poly Scholars Award which comes with some scholarship money, and iPad, and guaranteed housing. But I’ve been hearing that they put all the CP Scholars into Cerro Vista. I want to dorm at either Sierra Madre or Yosemite with a buddy and I really don’t like the idea of isolated apartment style housing. Can someone confirm whether this is true or not?
The question you should ask yourself is what do you intend to do after graduation. There are many opportunities for employment with a CalPoly degree where the demographics of the workforce will not match the one you have grown up in. At 11% Asian, CalPoly is actually relatively close to real life America (4.8% according to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_the_United_States), and very close to California’s 13% (using the same source). I am not sure why you’d be scared. You can find bigots everywhere, sooner or later you’re bound to run into one, regardless of your ethnicity and regardless where you are. One of the best things you can do is to ignore them as most of them are just harmless pricks with big mouths. You should trust that most people at CalPoly (and in SLO) are very 21st Century, open minded and welcoming, try to mix-up with them as soon as you get there. Have fun, enjoy college life, learn to be an adult with all good and bad that comes with it, avoid being held back by your own preconceived ideas
Don’t know the answer to “they put all the CP Scholars into Cerro Vista”. Why not call Housing and ask? You might be able to room with your buddy in Cerro (same apt with side-by-side rooms, a single, so you share the same bathroom), same Cerro apt with both of you in the same room (a double), same room (a double) in the dorms, or each of you in Cerro but different apartments? Just explain things to Housing and maybe they can accommodate you or make suggestions.
Are you going to Open House? That’s a good time to tour the apartments and dorms as well as talk with someone in Housing.
