L&S Breadth Requirements Urgent Questions (OOS)

Hi,

I’m an OOS prospective transfer to UC:B’s L&S CS program. On the Transfer App update, it asks me to register breadth requirement courses and implies that OOS students aren’t eligible for IGETC or UC Reciprocity (only L&S requirements). I’m just not quite sure if completion of all these L&S courses are absolutely necessary for admission. It also asks whether I’ve completed 3 years of a foreign language, 2 English composition courses and 1 quantitative reasoning. I have completed related courses but I’m not quite sure which of these would serve as a replacement coming from an OOS college.

Can anyone please help explaining these and offer some guidance? The UC website refers me to assist.org but assist.org only seems to cater to California CCs.

OOS transfers aren’t eligible for IGETC (just CA CCs) or UC Reciprocity (other UCs).

I’d list the closest classes you have that satisfy the requirements. You can always call the number at the bottom of the form and ask for clarification.

Page 3 of this PDF http://students.berkeley.edu/files/admissions/12626_5.info_transadm.pdf shows some ways to satisfy with SAT or AP credit.

You might want to listen to the UCB webinar on Jan 22 at 10am PST that goes through how to fill out the forms, so it’s done correctly. You sign up here:

http://students.berkeley.edu/files/admissions/12626_5.info_transadm.pdf says that:

Students not at California community colleges or UCs would only be able to have the second option, which is to have the Reading and Composition, Quantitative Reasoning, and Foreign Language requirements completed by the spring before you transfer. Note that this is not the complete set of L&S breadth requirements (the seven course breadth is not required before transfer even though it is required for graduation).

Descriptions of each requirement are at http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/summary.html .

I think he just wants to know how to fill out the supplemental Berkeley form because he is guessing as to requirement fulfillment. At least that was my interpretation.

If you are applying for L&S CS, you presumably have math and CS course that will fulfill quantitative reasoning; see http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/qr.html .

Reading and Composition courses are courses emphasizing those subjects. At other schools, they may be listed as required frosh/soph English writing or composition courses. For schools other than California public universities and community colleges, your school needs to fill in http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/fp/29RCQuest.pdf for applicable courses.

Foreign language is satisfied by third year in high school, second semester in college, or sufficiently high AP or SAT subject test score; see http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirement/fl.html .

Correct, assist.org only lists CA community colleges so it won’t help you. For L&S at UC Berkeley, you are required to have three of the requirements:

  1. Reading and Composition = 2 college-level English composition courses
  2. Quantitative Reasoning = 1 college-level Math course, generally Calculus or Statistics
  3. Foreign Language = either 3 years in high school, or 1 year in college (2nd semester)
List the ones you’ve taken that seem the meet these requirements most closely.

In addition, list as many of the breadth requirements that you think you have. These are not required so it’s ok if you don’t have them all, but then you’ll want to meet with your college adviser right away after you transfer to figure out which ones you still need to take.

Um, @UCAdviser‌ are you someone we know? Anyhow, you misspelled advisor.

Adviser and advisor are both acceptable spellings in English. Personally, I prefer advisor too but UC Berkeley uses adviser.

The UCs use advisor.

Thanks a lot guys.
