LA/Berk Mathematics Transfer

Hey guys,

I am about to be Sophomore and am hoping to try for an UC-UC (intracampus) to LA/berk transfer in applied mathematics. My GPA is currently right about 3.5 with a steep upward trend - straight As in spring where I took Calc 3 (Multivarcalc) and linear algebra. That put my math GPA at about 3.75.

I unfortunately have a C in an introductory Engineering course (not a prereq for math majors) which is why my overall is poor (no excuses though - I didn't care and wasn't thinking about transfer at the time). I also have about 100 units finished already thanks to a large # of APs I took (50+ units worth). I also have quite a few high school ECs (including a good amount even in senior year), but none from college yet.

Do I have a decent shot at getting in to these top UCs or is my overall GPA too poor? Also, if sophomore year Fall grades are taken into account, I may just be able to get the GPA over 3.6...

Thanks!

Your Fall GPA will be taken into account. I’m not sure what your chances are though because you are a UC-UC transfer.

Thanks guys. I just saw the UCLA Fall 2011 admits by major and saw Applied Math had an enrollment GPA of 3.54. Is this number including the Fall of Sophomore year or just the first three quarters of college?

Also, I’ve read in some thread here at CC that UCLA gives equal priority to UC and CC transfers. This is a bit different from what you’ve told me, Starburst…

Anyways, thanks for responses so far!

Yes, this includes Fall. While UCLA technically says that they give equal priority, CCC transfers always have a higher admission rate.

Actually, applied GPA is 3.35. Admitted is 3.63. Enrolled is 3.54 for Applied Math (regular Mathematics is 3.7 like you said, Sunburst)

ALSO, I just found this:

At the bottom of the page, it seems admitted Community College transfers had an avg GPA of 3.70, but UC-UC transfers had 3.66. This is definitely odd, as it’s different from what I’ve been reading on this website…

I had another question: what types of extracurriculars should I get involved in over the next few months if I wish to bolster my chances even more? I already have quite a few from HS, but I’m wondering if there’s any point in my trying to do something extra now…since I’m far ahead in math, I’m wondering if I should begin some sort of research (or would this be detrimental to my transfer prospects)? I know research is important for grad school admissions…

Thanks guys.

Yes, but they had much higher admission rates:

"California community colleges 15,952 84.53% 5,058 31.71% 93.58%

other UC campuses 746 3.95% 157 21.05% 2.90%"

Hi LAforlife,

You’re absolutely right. I’m going to be hoping for the best. Any advice on things I can do from this point to increase my chances (other than writing a great personal statement and aiming for a 4.0 this upcoming quarter)?

Thanks.

That’s pretty much it other than having your pre-reqs done (and doing well in them). UCLA is about your stats and PS, they don’t really take much else into account.

Thank you for your responses and suggestions Sunburst and LAforLife.

Regarding pre-reqs, what is it about them that UCLA/Berk will mainly look at? Is it whether or not I will be able to pass them in the 3 quarters I have ahead of me? If I receive my acceptance/rejection in March, I may still have 1-2 pre-req classes for which they did not see my grade final (I’ll be taking those either Winter or Spring this upcoming year) when making decisions.

Also, if stats are most important, do you guys think pre-req GPA is weighted moreso than overall GPA (I didn’t do well in a non pre-req course)?

Thanks, once again.

They look to see that you will have them all completed. Generally speaking, overall GPA is significantly more important. They won’t see your grades for Winter and Spring, but they will see everything before that and will look to make sure that you weren’t performing poorly in your pre-reqs.
