Ladies! Want a man's advice on picking a dress?

If you're an asian with a really pale complexion and black hair, then never wear black because it will just make you look even more pale.

I'm going to have to disagree with that. Black is one of those neutral colors that looks good on everyone.

Color matches vary according to eye color, skin tone, and yes, even build. Style of dress (pleats, frills) should be chosen with especial regard to body shape. Please do not unconditionally say that all blondes with dark eyes should wear a pleated black dress. It makes no sense.

I also have to agree with previous posters that a yellow dress with almost any blonde hair will not mix well, because blondes (especially those with blue eyes) are typically pale enough to make yellow a bad contrast. I look like that. I've tried yellow. I know.

Anyway, you're fooling yourself if you think that one person's (ill-informed) opinion on single dress types for women will make an impact on the choices those women make. I, and all of the female friends whose shopping habits I know, like to buy dresses that we like, and that we think look mildly flattering. That phenomenon results in a varied closet of colors, shapes, lengths, and styles. No one is going to buy a wardrobe full of black pleated dresses. Certainly not because of a thread on a college forum.

Thanks for your interesting shower trivia, though. That made me smirk.

I'm just giving my opinion on what I think looks good. I'm not saying that all people will think that way (but I guess that my wording implies that, and I'm sorry). I just thought that women would like a perspective of a straight man if that's who they are trying to impress. And like I said before, these are for formal occasions, not casual wear.

No, I appreciate this thread, because it amused me a great deal but also opened my eyes up. I had no idea straight guys think about this. Guess I'm gonna have to be more careful next time I dress......... and I like your name, too hahahahaha.

Thank you for your opinion. Honestly, it is nice to see that you are concerned. I apologize for a ruffled response; it's the feminist in me. Your wording indeed seemed to be clarity's downfall (it's the biggest drawback to the internet, in my opinion)--saying something like "what women should wear" instead of perhaps "what I'd like to see women wearing" caused my confusion. I assumed that the very general suggestions you made were intended as "new rules."

Just one piece of constructive criticism: A lot of women don't like to be told what to do or wear without having asked. The internet's trimming of tone to bare bones makes it easy for anyone to assume. Best thing to do is go out of one's way to demonstrate the intended tone, so it's not misconstrued.

I think I'll go back to the CommonApp thread now.

i also appreciate your opinion but this is just so random haha, now i'll provide mine

if you have nice colored eyes, green or blue, its nice to wear a dress that brings that out

yellow would probably do nothing. yellow is usually best pulled off by olive/tan complexions...and it is still a very difficult color to pull off. the only blonde i've seen pull off yellow is Reese Witherspoon

this is also hard to pull off. you could end up looking too...much...red
i think redheads can pull off LBDs very well, they have natural color to enhance the simpleness of the dress
its also often advised that redheads wear dresses incorporating emerald greens, this being the contrasting color to red helps accentuate their hair. you wouldn't THINK it looks good, but it does

anyone can pull off a LBD, it just has to be the right fit.

Why would you girls question the obvious expertise of the OP (GiggitusMaximus)? He has been the authority on women's fashion for God knows how long! I agree with his flawless ability on matching you with your dream dress. When prom comes around and some of you girls are crying the next day because your dress made you look fat or pale, remember you could have asked the authority on this topic. (BTW no girl looks fat or pale, you are all so beautiful)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

You mean to say "girls can look fat and pale, but fat and pale is beautiful too"

Yes? I'm trying to be that rugged guy with the secret sensitive side that every girl falls asleep dreaming about.

Except, obviously, those lovely women who fall asleep dreaming of American grey wolves.

Hahahaha. Good call Zamzam, that appears to be my only competition. I think my odds with women are worse than a grey wolf but much better than a fashion adviser.

thx for the advice fashion expert..lol
