hahah, thanks so much!

In a surprise finish, Lafayette edged out William and Mary as my D’s choice. We visited LC yesterday, trying to get a like impression of the campus on a sunny spring day to our last visit to Wm and Mary. In the end, she felt that the 9 hour ride, cost of flights, time for trains was a challenge she wasn’t up for and wanted to be closer to home. This is the best of two good choices for D1 if she feels that anxious about the distance and she seems very happy now that the check is in the mail.
The place looked great yesterday, and it likely helped that we ran into an Admissions Officer who remembered her, and took a half hour asking how he could help with the decision, reinforcing the personal nature of the education.

Congratulations frankur to your daughter. My dd is just finishing up her first year. It was a good year and she is very happy with her choice.

Thanks. Maybe we met your daughter yesterday. We bumped into a freshman from Mendham who chose Lafayette over Bucknell and Villanova. Of course she loved it, but talked to us for about a half hour on how easy it was to make friends, the orientation, professors, no pressure on the party scene, etc. It really helped a lot.
She was also able to get over ‘Dad went here’ as it has changed so much and I really couldn’t remember a few buildings, roads to the Point, etc. Funny what goes into the decision making process but it is no longer ‘where my Dad went’, it changed yesterday to her choice. All is good.

Congrats on you D’s decision Frankur. You probably are already aware, but the Marquis Scholarship offers other benefits other than the $20k merit per year. It also includes one college-sponsored interim session abroad, among other benefits.

You mentioned that you D is strong in science and math. If she has any inkling that she might want to major in engineering, she made the right choice (W&M does not offer engineering, only 3+2 programs with other schools).

Was a hard choice between some good schools, each offering something unique, but Lafayette won.

Haven’t seen that they offer anything beyond the freshman 4 year Marquis Scholarship, which wasn’t offered to me. Did I hopefully miss something?

Does the school ever cover any or all the costs of break travel to those not receiving the Marquis Scholarship?

Must have just missed qualifying ;-(

Puffin,
Sorry you didn’t qualify. D was fortunate, didn’t apply for it. We struck out on other financial aid (which I guess means my business is doing OK) but the Marquis offers some tix to events at a discount, field trips and a stipend for travel on a mid-winter break for a course/project overseas.

Frankur, glad your D understands that Lafayette being “dad’s school” doesn’t mean it can’t also be “my school.” It is a VERY different place than it was in the 70’s! Good luck to her!

Did you notice that Theta Delt is now an academic building, Ramer History House? My son had a seminar there his freshman year - that is one of many changes but it tells you all you need to know about the direction Laf has taken in the last 30 years. ;)

Puffin,

The Marquis scholarship is the only merit based award given to students. All the other financial aid is all need based.
The school does sometimes offer financial aid for students who want to participate in interim / summer study abroad academic classes but it’s quite competitive and is a mix of merit and need based.

For certain abroad trips (the LIME trip or EWB trips to Honduras), the college and student groups do cover all costs.

What was your SAT 1 score and other stats? Can you please tell? And financial aid?

@ all those who got accepted in ED
