Lafayette College Q&A: Academic Life 2015-2016

Wondering which classes to choose, what an FYS is, or what the results of your online placement test mean? Perhaps you have questions regarding our engineering curriculum or simply want to know more about a specific major. Feel free to ask any questions related to academics at Lafayette College, and we will do our best to answer them!

Is it feasible to double major in Biology/Biochemistry (AB) and GovLaw/Policy Studies and be premed?
When do class schedules come out?
Do any of the FYS require textbooks?

Hey @livelovelaf19 ! It is definitely possible to pursue a double major in Bio/ Biochem and Gov Law/ Policy Studies while following the pre-med track, thanks to the fact that our curriculum is extremely flexible. As a student at Lafayette, you also have the option to create a Self-Designed Major, so that may also be worth checking out if you are looking to combine these two areas of study. That being said, the possibility of double majoring requires a certain amounts of flexibility in your schedule in order to take all of the necessary classes, this flexibility will be partially dependent on how many AP/ IB credits you are coming in with. Additionally, pursuing a degree in Biochem best follows the pre-med track; it fulfills all the requirements except 2 classes. All this aside, I would also like to point out that it is not always important to have a ton of degrees on your diploma. What is important to remember is to explore all that Lafayette has to offer and take courses which interest you. Medicals schools will be able to see that you’re a Bio major who took a lot of classes in Gov Law (or vice versa) without the need to actually “double major” in these concentrations. If you have an specific questions about the curriculum I would recommenced emailing the appropriate department heads with questions (their names and emails can be found in the links below).

Biology: https://biology.lafayette.edu/degree-program/
Biochemistry: https://chemistry.lafayette.edu/program/
Gov Law: https://govlaw.lafayette.edu/program/
Policy Studies: https://policystudies.lafayette.edu/program/
Self-Designed Major: http://interdisciplinary.lafayette.edu/students-with-self-designed-majors/

Schedules should come out in the end of July or early August.

Many FYS classes do require textbooks or at least some type of small paper back or novel, but that is nothing to worry about right now. Once you get your schedule you can figure out which, if any, books are required and you will have more than enough time to purchase or rent them from the bookstore or any other site of your choice.

Hope this helped!

@LafColMavenss do you get to choose from the FYS classes or you do all of them?

You only take one FYS class. Sometime in the summer Lafayette send out a list of FYS classes available in the spring (they change year to year) and if I remember correctly you rank your top few choices and will get one of them.

@ happy1 thank you.
