How is essential is it to bring a laptop? Would just a desktop be fine, and do you need a printer, etc. or is that just taking up space?

Technically you can get by with a desktop. Most people do have laptops however and they are nice because you can take them to the library, commons, wherever. You will need the ability to print but there are public printers everywhere and you have $10 per term credit on them ($5 Spring Term) if I remember correctly. Since I discovered this little fact, my printer has done nothing but collect dust.
