My D is a high school senior who 2 days ago decided to apply to SDSU nursing program.
4.3 CSU GPA
33 ACT
1420 SAT
local admission area
She didn’t think she could get in but I finally convinced her she is competitive. I think she wants to stay in CA but she’s applied throughout the west coast and some others. This looks like a great program but we’ll see what happens.
D just received an email inviting her to SDSU Merit Scholarship reception in late January. Says she’s a potential recipient and she’ll get to meet past recipients and receive a personalized campus tour.
Thanks @davisgirl. I hope the school is everything you wanted so far. We read somewhere that clinical work for nursing students starts sophomore year.
@Banker1 I absolutely love SDSU. The nursing students are like a family. We all help each other. My 1st semester was easier than high school. I got all A’s Yes, clinical starts sophomore year. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
@davisgirl How’s second semester so far; are you still liking this program? My D is cautiously optimistic that she’ll be admitted for Nursing but we still haven’t been notified. She has been offered the National Merit Scholarship but doesn’t know if she’ll be able to maintain the high GPA (3.5 minimum) required for renewal.
Question: do all Nursing students live in the same dorm or LLC?
My D attended the scholarship reception 1/27 but wasn’t able to see any of the nursing facilities. For that she is looking forward to the 3/17 open house event. Thanks for your help
I am still happy with the program. Second semester is tough with Anatomy. You have of whether to live in the Nursing community. I chose a different dorm but there are still several nursing students on my floor. Message me if you D goes to SDSU and I will give you my contact info.
D accepted today to the Nursing program. I think she’s relieved and excited. She wasn’t able to see the Nursing facilities at the open house but she might try to schedule another campus visit for that. Happy she made the decision to apply here even if last minute.
Hi davisgirl- I’m new to posting on this site. D will be applying to SDSU School of Nursing this Fall. 4.3 GPA,1350 SAT, taking ACT this weekend, Senior class President. Do they put all Nursing students in the same dorm? If so, which dorm is it? I’m wondering if I can request my daughter to have her own dorm room, yet share the living and bathroom- suite style if you will. Is your daughter happy with the program? Is she in Sorority? I would love to talk to you about SDSU. We live in CA but are not local. She needs a Plan B, but SDSU with its Direct Entry is such a great deal. What was your D other college choices?
@BlackStallion SDSU nursing is a great deal. It’s getting admitted that is the hard part. Our approach was to apply broadly throughout CA and the US to keep those options open. If you apply to SDSU for Nursing and aren’t admitted they won’t let you select an alternate major so there is some risk involved. @davisgirl is a first year nursing student at SDSU and I believe you can check her post #5 of this thread for the response to your question about housing. Good luck to your D on her ACT testing. SDSU superscores SATs and ACTs so she may wish to take each more than once.
Do you live in a dorm with all Nursing students? I heard that’s an option, but not sure my D would want that, maybe it’s just too much of the same type of students, possibly not choosing that option is better as you would room with a student with a completely different major. Your thoughts
thank you Banker1- I now see that post about the living option and @davisgirl response. Thank you- reading these posts today makes me anxious as I thinking the % accepted in the nursing program was less than last year. Such a long shot!
@BlackStallion my D was also anxious about the possibility of not getting accepted into direct entry BSN programs including SDSU and that’s why she applied broadly to both in-state and OOS options. She applied to 17 direct entry and pre-Nursing programs and has received and weighed her acceptances and has just now narrowed her choices to SDSU and U Cincinnati. She has also been accepted into Weber Honors and is trying to decide if she wants to pursue that and that decision could also impact housing options.
At any rate you can read about the journeys of many nursing applicants in the nursing-major section of this website.
Because of the low 2-5% acceptance rate of the CA public school direct entry BSN options (UCI, UCLA, SDSU, CSUF) candidates will want to think about applying to many others to be safe. There’s no guarantee for anyone to get into any of those 4 programs. My advice would be to include some safety schools with your planning. Good luck!
