Last minute packing questions

Do we need to bring a router and ethernet cable (im bringing a macbook)?

Also, do we get separate bills for like cable tv, internet and landline phone usage? Or is that already included in the Room/Board fee? Should i bring a landline phone?

You don’t need a router.

Some people use ethernet cables (although the dorms all have wireless) but you can pick up free ethernet cables and TV cables at each dorms’ IT center. You do not need to bring a landline phone - they are included.

the landline phone is included, but it’s one of those cheap crappy ones so you might want to bring your own.

i thought that if you use the landline in the room, you will get billed for outgoing calls, because that’s why you have to put in some id-type number first…?

you’re billed for outgoing long distance, yes

that’s why i only knew a handful of people who bothered to plug their phones in

so is a room phone really unnecessary? (also, i’m going to assume the ‘living room’ in the high rises does not have a phone/phone jack?)

i really don’t think so

when i had my phone plugged in sophomore year, i got one call the entire year

and it was pnc calling, looking for the guy who lived there the year before

No one uses the landlines. It’s a scam that penn runs.

Also do not bring a router, the college house IT people will yell at you if you plug it in. All rooms are wired for ethernet, which can be faster than the wireless sometimes.

What about incoming calls? How does that work?

You aren’t billed for incoming calls (at least I was not the one time I had an incoming call freshman year). Unless you don’t have a cell phone, I wouldn’t worry about ever using the landline. A much cheaper option is setting up your computer with Skype and paying $2 a month for unlimited calls in the US.

do we get cable tv?

^yes, but we don’t have cool channels like HBO.
