Hello!
I am a student at The University of Alabama. Unfortunately, I am in a bind to pay for school this semester. I owe about $1000, and books this semester will cost about $488. I calculated the cost of books after doing a price comparison on many websites. My mom said that she would be able to help me pay for school this semester, however that did not happen. UA has payment plans, but it is still difficult. I do not have a cosigner, so private loans are not an option. I know this is a stretch because school starts on Wednesday, but I’m hoping that someone knows about an opportunity I can take advantage of to help. Thank you!
I don’t know of scholarships at this late date, and doubt there are any available, but have you already taken out the maximum unsubsidized loan? (Assuming you filed FAFSA.)
What about your dad or grandparents? Do you have a work study job? Did you work over winter break?
Is the debt from this semester or last semester?
If your mom applies for a Parent Plus loan and is denied, you’ll get an additional loan.
As for books, look into renting them. A Bama mom recently posted that she rented her DD’s books this semester for less than $150. Big savings.
Also…I think you’re a URM, if I remember correctly. Let me see if there’s a diversity office that can help you.
Please send me a PM about your grades, etc, and I’ll see if I can help you get an add’l scholarship to help cover this. But in the meantime, have your mom apply for a Plus loan if she’ll get denied so that you’ll get an add’l loan.
Refresh my memory…are you a junior or senior? Are you there on either National Merit or National Achievement scholarship.
