Late AP exams

Hi!

I already posted this on the international students forum a few weeks ago, but because I didn't get a satifying answer there I'm trying again here. People here are probably more knowledgable than internationals in this area : )

Do I have to take AP exams prior to the enrollment in college or can I take them whenever I want? For example, can I still take AP exams when already enrolled in college (1st semester) and get credits for them later (2nd semester)?
That would save me a lot of money... and time. :)

I'm an international student and AP exams are much cheaper than taking the corresponding classes. I know that they're only administered in May, but I'm going to start college in spring, so I could take them during my 1st semester and I would've gotten the results before the beginning of the 2nd semester.

I would like to use them to satisfy the general education requirements. If it matters, I'm a community college student.

You can't take AP exams as a college student, but what you're looking for DOES exist. It's also a college board product and its called CLEP

"The College-Level Examination Program® or CLEP provides students of any age with the opportunity to demonstrate college-level achievement through a program of exams in undergraduate college courses. There are 2,900 colleges that grant credit and/or advanced standing for CLEP exams." [<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html%5D%5B/url">http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html][/url</a>]</p>

"Did you know that doing well on a CLEP exam can earn you the same amount of credit that you'd get if you took — and did well in — a semester- or year-long college course covering the same material? Read on to learn how to get credit for what you already know."[<a href="http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/credit.html%5D%5B/url">http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/credit.html][/url</a>]</p>

Thanks, I know about the CLEP but my college doesn't grant credit for it.

Are you sure that I can't take AP exams as a college student? Even though I haven't had the chance to take them in my home country?

You must be a high school student to take an AP.

You can just go to a counselor of your local high school and ask him to take an AP. Plus, I personally know someone who has taken APs at university, after high school.

Thomas,
I can completely answer your query. I am an AP Coordinator in India and well a student can take at any point of time. Even after you leave high school. So if you want to write the AP exams during your 1st sem of college so that you get awarded the credits during the 2nd sem then go right ahead and write them. Just make sure a high school would allow you to write the APs with them. Thats all. Also make sure your college is ready to take in your AP grades for 2nd semester. I have many students who are in their Freshman year of college and have written AP at our school.

The CLEP is more for college drop-outs in the U.S. For students liek you CLEP will not be that helpful. AP would be more of an advantage.
