I don't think so. But wait...if you received an invitation to this weekend AND you received an invitation to Duke Up Close, does it really matter which one you go to? I guess you won't be with the "Latino" population of applicants if you don't go to the Latino Recruitment weekend, but Duke Up Close is totally free and I don't think that the Latino weekend is.

And whomever said that they hate the word Latino, I'm with you. I appreciate Duke reaching out to me and such, but sometimes I feel like schools are being condescending (unintentionally) with all of the "Latino recruitment" talk/hype. Does anybody else feel that way?

Yeah, I'm guessing it is a likely. I got one for the BSAI weekend and I'm kinda shocked. The letter doesn't say "prospective" but "potential" students so I think this is a last ditch effort on part of admissions to say "See how great we are? You NEED to come here"...I won't be going though

Think they might extend the deadline for me? I wasn't able to get plane tickets on time, so I didn't fax them the reply form. I'm gonna send it tomorrow (if I get tickets from them) and see what happens. Wish me luck!

i dont think it will affect your chances; they know many of the applicants are low income and may not be able to afford it and others have prior engagements. just call the office and tell them you wont be able to go, but u really want to. my friend did that because she had a debate event that weekend and she still got in :)

hey guys-- i know some of you are going to the latino recruitment weekend at the end of this week--
take it from someone who just came back from the BSAI (african american equivalent)-- duke is amazing!! seriously be prepared to desert all thought of harvard, yale, or princeton! Duke is the place to be.. you'll see! i know i'm not the only who came back this weekend claiming theyve had the best time of their life and that there is no where but Duke they would rather be!
i was like crying when we had to leave, i was so sad! i'm quite jealous you guys are going and i have to wait till august :(
haha anywayyy.. have fun guys.. it is AMAZING

you most likely will be accepted trophy, dont worry about it.. you'll know tomorrow! btw.. i saw ur from ATL! haha im from southern GA, a little town close to valdosta..i dont see that many ppl from GA on the forum though

About the latino thing, I am glad I am not the only one a little "sensitive" to the issue. I almost fell of my chair when I read the name of the dance! Talk about tacky! It is almost funny to see the efforts that some people think they have to go through to make a certain ethnic group "comfortable" ? ( is that the idea?) At the end, I think it just helps perpetuate stereotypes.

It also happens that I am as competitive as any "anglo" student. And like I said before ( and I guess is one of my pet peeves ) ...is "latino" even an english word, or it has just crossed over like so many others..? I would expect academic institutions of the caliber of Duke to be aware of these issues.

Anyway.. I think I am about to start a rant!!

On the other hand, I think I am crossing Duke out. I went there last summer as part of TIP program. I hated the town. The campus is nice and the quality of the university is just the same as the ivies in my opinion. But Durham sucks!! I hope you guys enjoy the week end there though.!

I vacation a lot in Georgia. My family has a house in Ellijay, in Gilmer County (next to Jasper). It's about an hour N. of Atlanta in the mountains.
