I was hoping someone can help me here or had experience with this. My ds is between a junior and a senior at a school 500 miles away. He called saying his depression is so bad, he wants to take a medical leave of absence. The biggest problem for him is not taking his pills consistently because they upset his stomach. He's at a small LAC and I can't find any information on tuition reimbursement or if we have to pay the whole semesters tuition since he's been in school for over a month. Thanks!!

I imagine every school has different policies, so you’ll have to call. My son’s school refunds a perentage based on how much of the semester the student attends. He had to drop out the second week of school due to mental health issues, so he should have received only 80% back. But the office of the dean of engineering was wonderful and said they will refund 100% to us!

Check the bursar’s website–usually there will be a calendar of fee reimbursement, i.e., x% after one week, y% after two weeks, etc. Look up “withdrawal percentage.” Unfortunately, the amount is likely to be 25% refund after 4 weeks. I’m sorry your son is going through this, best wishes to your family. Also have your son contact the dean of students–there may be some assistance there.

It will vary by school. At my daughter’s school there is a 100% refund in week 1, 50% the 2nd week, 0 after that. You will need to ask the school.

I would definitely tell your son to contact a dean or health services in addition to the bursur’s office. Perhaps there is something medically that can be done, like change a prescription etc. to salvage the semester and the financial investment.

Thank you for all the good responses. I decided to drive out there tomorrow to talk with ds and his adviser and associate dean. I will also go to the counseling center there to see if something can be set up. He already has a place to go to check in about his meds which is off campus. What makes it harder, is just wanting your child to have a normal college life and he can’t (though he has a lot of friends and loves the school). Can’t find much on the school’s website about the tuition so I guess I’ll have to check there too. I feel alone with this, but I’m glad there are others like you who have BTDT.
