Leda Scholars Application: 2016-2017

@AspireandDream
Did you qualify?

@CIRCUITDEBATER I personally don’t think so, but it’s not guaranteed it until they announce it :slight_smile:

Does anyone know around when we’ll find out about part I?

@AspireandDream
Well if your PSAT Score is good enough to make NMSQT, I’m confident that it is way above the minimum threshold for LEDA and may even be one of the highest score :slight_smile:

@CIRCUITDEBATER I don’t believe it is high enough for NMSQT, while it does remain above the minimum (above the 90th percentile)…

It also worries me that I won’t make it in because I have a 28 ACT score, which isn’t very low. (I can literally find anything to worry about thanks to my anxiety)

I wish I could just stop worrying because everything happens for a reason. If it is in God’s will, then I will get in.

For the next round, do we send in new scores (like from the PSAT and December SAT/ACT)?

@univbound101 I do believe that we send in scores for part II, if we make it. At least that is what has occurred in part years…

@univbound101 Test scores will be asked of you during the second round.

So, now that you guys have submitted your applications and are waiting to hear back from LEDA, I’d like to share some advice.

Last year right around this time I was super anxious about the LEDA application. I worried and obsessed about my test scores, and my classes, and whether or not I was good enough for LEDA. Instead of enjoying my Winter Break, I incessantly checked my email and College Confidential for updates that didn’t come until February. With that being said, please don’t stress out about test scores, or your application. LEDA is fully aware that test scores are correlated with income and they are also looking to see that you take the most challenging courses AVAILABLE to you, so if AP isn’t offered at your school, don’t beat yourself up.

Now that you have all sent in your applications, the process is out of your hands for at least a month, if not more. I like that there are some productive and interesting discussions on this thread, so please keep it going. Don’t torture yourself by constantly worrying about the application, because I can tell you it won’t help and it’ll only cause you undue stress.

Happy Holidays :slight_smile:

Have any of you started looking at your dream/match/safety schools yet?

Here is a glimpse of my list:

Dream: Stanford, Yale
Reach: Claremont McKenna, Smith, Lafayette
Match: Howard, Spelman, Baylor
Safety: 2 state schools.

I have!

TBH I honestly no idea. The most prestigious school anyone from my high school is a state school. Same for most of my fam. They all got associates degrees then transferred. Seven people total are the high school teachers at my school. Four of them cornered me and asked what the HECK I was gonna do for college. I got to do this dual enrollment program, covered by the state so by the time I graduate from my high school I have more than enough credits for an associates, so that would be useless. And I just don’t know where to start. All I know is that I want to go to a four year institute and I have very good grades- not perfect mind you, just very good- but I can’t even fathom how you can sit down and pick a few while leaving out so many.
That’s one heck of a rant. Anyone else with this confusion. It’s not that much of an issue.

Jeez. Now that I reread that, I sound trippy. But, I sorta figured that LEDA would help us figure it out- the quagmire that is higher education.

@arinuma
On their website it says that they do help with the college process,

I want to share with some of y’all some advice I learned during the application process

As stated, test scores do not matter at all, and please don’t worry about NMSQT, that test really does not matter. No current LEDA C.12 scholar is a NMSQT semifinalist, and 1/4 of us already got into an Ivy League, Stanford, or MIT.
For me, I just learned to forget that I even applied to LEDA, so I could loosen up a bit. If some of y’all were wondering about the pictures they asked for , they told us that they don’t even look at them during this time, they only look at it once they admit the ENTIRE 100 person Cohort, just to see what they have coming. No one worry about AP classes or IB, it’s doesn’t matter, and don’t worry what type of school you go to. I go to a very low income inner city HS in Los Angeles, it won’t affect you in anyway. Just try to be happy and calm :slight_smile:

Happy Holidays y’all!!

@cryinginspanish
What did the SAT/ACT Score Distribution look like for your cohort before and after LEDA?

Hey everyone, just realized that there was a thread for LEDA on here. Cohort 13 hopeful too!!

Welcome! @mks2018

@mks2018 HI

@CIRCUITDEBATER LEDA doesn’t track improvement of the ACT/SAT after prep. In fact, some scholars never took either test before or switched tests during LEDA, so it wouldn’t make sense to track those numbers.

I can tell you that the test prep was extremely beneficial in building a solid base for everybody, and after we left LEDA scholars continued to study and subsequently improved. For example, the ACT class I took helped me improve my starting ACT by 4 points by the end of the institute, but I continued to prep after the institute and I managed to improve by 5 points overall.

Also keep in mind that you will get out what you put in. LEDA provides us with brilliant instructors, but it’s still up to every scholar to take the initiative of their standardized testing preparation.

Hey guys!

I legit just signed up CC to join the LEDA forum since I submitted that app weeks ago. Also I wish everyone all the luck that we ALL really need. channeling all that good luck to everyone and myself included

I can feel my heart pounding crazy. Oi.

@ramengodzz I hope 2017 brings good fortune to all of us. I’m so nervous!
