A ton of people from my dad's side of the family went to Yale (not my dad though, he went to UPenn), including my grandfather and great-grandfather. Am I a legacy? Will admissions even care. It didn't seem to help my dad too much because he got wait listed there.

Your grandfather and great-grandfather to give you legacy status in a way that an aunt, uncle of sibling do not. Penn does offer a much stronger legacy hook through ED than does Yale through either SCEA or RD but don’t let that sway you if Yale is your first choice.

It would be worth knowing the names, dates of graduation, degree etc etc of each direct relative–grandfather, great grandfather etc…for your app. If you get in, you will need this info when they are looking at aid, as they ask if you have family from certain graduating classes, name, degree and year so they can match scholarship grant money to new frosh.

That said, direct legacey bump at admissions at Yale is your parent.

Okay, thank you!

Legacy is not a huge help at Yale. List it, but don’t rely on it…
